2018-08-03Obituary: Charles Norman Geschke - Victorian Ombudsman
Passed away in Melbourne on 23 July 2018, aged 94. Norman was Victoria’s second Ombudsman, following a distinguished career with the RAAF and six years as Victoria’s first Director of Consumer Affairs. We all strive to make a difference in life, but not too many people can look back on a life quite so well-lived, who helped so many thousands of people, as Charles Norman Geschke, popularly known as Norm.

Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman, Marie Anderson, publishes her second Quarterly Bulletin. This includes reports on complaints about the treatment provided by a GP to a patient with breast cancer, the way a Council dealt with a planning application for a wind turbine, and the care and treatment of patients within two Health Trusts. This edition of the Bulletin also provides a further update on the important work within her Office to prepare for the first ‘own initiative’ investigations and their ongoing research project to explore issues in public sector complaints handling.

In late 2016, the Victorian Ombudsman created an Early Resolution Team which identifies matters that can be resolved informally, focusing on practical outcomes. The team now handles about 85 per cent of approaches to the Ombudsman, closing most within 30 days.

The European Court of Human Rights has granted the request for leave of the RA Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan to intervene as a third party in the case of Hakobyan v. Armenia. This is an example of international best practice initiated by a National Human Rights Institution.

2018-07-20Niagara Region infringed journalist’s rights: Ombudsman makes recommendations
Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé called on the Regional Municipality of Niagara to apologize publicly to a local journalist and a citizen blogger for seizing their property and ejecting them from a council meeting last December. The region’s actions were unreasonable, unjust, wrong and contrary to law, Mr. Dubé’s investigation found.
