Dr. Endale Haile was appointed Chief Ombudsman of Ethiopia in June 2018, replacing the Hon. Mrs Fozia Amin. Dr Haile began his career in education and spent five years as a member in the Ethiopian Parliament.

On 28 January 2011, the Croatian Parliament adopted the Law on the Preventive Mechanism for Suppression of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment and Punishment, by which the Republic of Croatia has fulfilled its obligation after signing the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment and Punishment (OPCAT).

2019-03-11Review of school leaving examinations will become more transparent
In recent years, the Czech Ombudsman repeatedly warned about shortcomings in the procedure of the Ministry of Education (hereinafter “the Ministry”) in reviewing the results of school-leaving examinations (the “maturita” exam used in numerous types of secondary schools). Based on the Ombudsman’s comments, the Ministry has amended the so-called “maturita decree” and modified certain procedures and forms so that the students would now have better information on where and how to lodge a complaint.

The Ombudsman received nearly 4,100 complaints last year. In addition, he launched over 60 investigations on his own initiative. Most complaints concerned the police, social welfare and health care, and prisons.

2019-03-08Ombudsman for Bermuda elected new Caribbean Director and Regional President of IOI
The Ombudsman for Bermuda, Ms Victoria Pearman, has been elected to represent the Caribbean and Latin America as Caribbean Director of the IOI. She will serve as Regional President for the IOI’s Caribbean & Latin American Region. In this role, she will participate in meetings of the IOI Executive Committee and work closely with the two Directors for Latin America to manage regional matters and coordinate activities.
