European Ombudsman carries out a series of inquiries and initiatives into the COVID-19 response in the EU administration
In response to the unprecedented situation created by COVID-19, many of the EU institutions, agencies and bodies were required to adopt targeted measures and/or to adapt their working processes to deal with the challenges of the emergency. These ranged from helping to coordinate the public health response in the EU and the approval of dedicated medicines to economic measures to address the social and economic impact of the crisis.

Malawi Ombudsman staff take the Oath of Secrecy
On 7 August 2023, the Office of the Ombudsman administered the Oath of Secrecy to 40 of its members of staff and interns. The Director of Legal Services and Advisory, Chipiliro Mangulama, said the ceremony is in line with Section 10 of The Ombudsman Act, which stipulates the need for officers in the office of the Ombudsman to treat with utmost confidentiality any information made available to them in the course of their work.

The Office of the Ombudsman recognized integrity champions of the youth during its Campus Integrity Crusaders Awards Ceremony on 30 August 2024. The Yukon Ombudsman issues report into fairness complaint regarding sexualized abuse at Elementary School
The Office of the Yukon Ombudsman has issued the first of two reports into a complaint of unfairness against the Yukon Department of Education from a parent of a student at Hidden Valley Elementary School. The Ombudsman investigation found that the government’s failure to communicate with parents at the school was unfair, depriving parents of the opportunity to take timely action to help their children.

Northern Ireland Ombudsman proposes new complaints handling standards for public bodies
The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman, Margaret Kelly, has today called for a culture change in the way public bodies in Northern Ireland deal with complaints from members of the public. Her comments came as a new survey showed two thirds of people who were dissatisfied with the level of service from a public body said they would not complain as they thought it would make no difference or be too trivial.

52% of migrants who came to Europe in 2017 were women, according to the 2017 United Nations International Migration Report. Together with children, women and girls are the other most vulnerable groups most at risk from all types of abuses including trafficking, forced marriage or sexual exploitation. Up to 94% of them were trafficked for sexual exploitation in 2016.

Alberta Ombudsman finds inadequate Regulation impacts benefit access for people with developmental disabilities
The Alberta Ombudsman has released a public report on his investigation into the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program which found systemic issues in how the program assesses intellectual capacity. The investigation, initiated by a complaint from a mother advocating for her son, sheds light on legislative flaws in the program’s eligibility criteria and decision-making process.
