2018-12-10Ontario Ombudsman’s mandate expanded
Last Thursday, 6th of December, the Ombudsman Paul Dubé committed his office to the new responsibilities that were transferred to it under the Restoring Trust, Transparency and Accountability Act, 2018. The legislation expands the Ombudsman’s mandate to include children’s aid societies and French-language services.

Victorian Ombudsman, Deborah Glass, will investigate the use of “solitary confinement” involving young people in Victoria, using the United Nations’ Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT). Ratified by the Australian Government in late 2017, OPCAT is yet to be implemented in Victoria.

The Office of the Ombudsman attended the closing symposium of the 5 year Justice and Accountability Programme called Chilungamo at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe. Through this program, the office received funding to implement seven main activities which were packaged into four strategic areas of resolution of backlog of cases, public awareness, stakeholder engagement and capacity building.

The mediation process is a tool that enables personal interaction and respectful and direct dialogue for promoting dispute resolution. It has existed in many countries for several decades as an alternative to the classic complaint handling procedure. Issue 8 of the IOI’s Best Practice Paper series was developed by the Ombudsman and State Comptroller of Israel and draws on the office’s vast experience in this field.

The Ombudsman of Namibia announced the appointment of Ms Ingrid Husselmann as the Deputy Chief, effective 1 November 2018. As the Deputy Chief, Ms Husselmann will lead and oversee the operational management of the Division: Human Rights and Legal services. She will also serve as the Children’s Advocate in the Office of the Ombudsman.

During 10 – 12 October 2018, Thai Ombudsman Viddhavat Rajatanun welcomed a delegation from the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia led by Ombudsman Amzulian Rifai, to sign a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia.
