2025-07-03Ombudsman Sindh launches collaborative outreach initiative with UN agencies and civil society
Mr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput, Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, chaired a high-level meeting attended by representatives of prominent UN agencies, foreign and local NGOs, community based organizations, local support organizations, and civil society organizations to formally launch the “Awareness and Outreach Program - A Collaborative Initiative.” This initiative is aimed at strengthening public awareness of citizens’ rights, promoting transparency and accountability, and enhancing the visibility and accessibility of grievance redress mechanisms across Sindh.

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Children invites Ombudsman and Mediator Institutions affiliated with the International Ombudsman Institute to participate in a 2-day Workshop on the theme “The role of Ombudsman and Mediators in monitoring the situation of children in conflict with the law and deprived of their liberty” to be held in the Republic of Mauritius on 5 and 6 September 2023. Kindly note that the registration deadline has been extended to 18 August 2023.

2022-10-25NSW Ombudsman Annual Report and summary of investigations report tabled in Parliament
The NSW Ombudsman’s Office Annual Report: 2021-22 has been tabled in Parliament. The report provides insight to the 24,874 contacts received by the office in the financial year to 30 June 2022. These included 12,363 actionable complaints, which highlight the diversity of issues raised by NSW citizens accessing services from NSW Government agencies, local councils and certain community-service providers.

In its special report, the Office of the Greek Ombudsman stated, that forced returns of third country nationals to their countries of origin are further reduced in 2022, however, the number of detainees in Pre-removal Centres and Police stations is disproportionately high. At the same time, complaints on illegal pushbacks are rising, reinforcing the EU Commission's proposal to member-states to establish independent border monitoring mechanisms.

2023-12-07Tranquilisers instead of individual support: even such cases are encountered during the Defender’s visits to residential facilities for people with disabilities
The stories of two men with mental disabilities, recorded by employees of the Defender’s Office during their visits, illustrate a phenomenon, which has mostly been overlooked so far: some people with mental disabilities, especially those with challenging behaviour, receive high doses of tranquilisers. According to the Deputy Defender, this practice has to change. Behaviour is often the only possible form of communication for people who cannot otherwise make contact with others. It is therefore necessary that the latter understand the unmet needs behind the patient’s challenging behaviour and be able to respond accordingly. Tranquillisers must not be the first, let alone the only and permanent “solution”.

The Honorable Ombudsman Grace Tikambenji Malera has nullified recruitment of 8 Call Center Agents for the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), saying it was done without following the due process, proper procedures and rules. According to Ms Malera, authorities within the MRA used word of mouth to announce the existing vacancies, a thing she has said is tantamount to Maladministration.
