The Ombudsman of Catalonia, as the Catalan Authority for the Prevention of Torture (OPCAT), has imposed himself the goal of having the Istanbul Protocol implemented in all places of deprivation of liberty in Catalonia within six months. According to this manual, the Ombudsman will lead the development of actual protocols for each type of centre.

After the Government brought back the quarantine regime and re-introduction more intensive restrictions on human rights and freedoms throughout the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas presented a report assessing the compliance of emergency management measures that were introduced in March this year with human rights and freedoms.

In pursuance of this objective the Honourable Ombudsman Sindh Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik inaugurated yet another Regional Office of Provincial Ombudsman Sindh in District South Karachi on 15th May 2014. This is the 16th Regional Office in the Province.

Study visit by human rights journalists from the Republic of Albania
On 16-18 June, 2014 a delegation of Albanian media representatives, specializing on human rights affairs held a working visit to Warsaw. The group was accompanied by one representative of the Office of the People’s Advocate of Albania (Ombudsman). The purpose of the visit was to share experiences in the area of human rights media coverage and ways of cooperation between the ombudsman and the media. Hence the delegation paid visits to the Polish Press Agency and a chosen radio broadcaster.

Van Woerkom’s not to become National Ombudsman
In the past two weeks there has been a lot of media attention on the election of Mr Van Woerkom as National Ombudsman of the Netherlands. A statement he made in 2010 about a Moroccan person and the fact that he left his former job with over 300 thousand Euro severance pay gave rise to many reactions.

The Parliamentary Ombudsmen, hosted the Nordic Ombudsmen Meeting
At the beginning of June, the Office of the Parliamentary Ombudsmen – JO, was hosting the Nordic Ombudsmen Meeting in the town Ystad in the southern part of Sweden. The Nordic Ombudsmen comprises of Ombudsmen from Denmark, Finland, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
