Ontario Ombudsman’s advanced investigative training course welcomes participants from around the world
This year, the Ontario Ombudsman’s annual investigative training course, “Sharpening Your Teeth” (SYT) was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from the 5th to the 7th of November 2018. Senior Ombudsman staff have trained hundreds of ombudsmen, investigators and other watchdog staff at this Toronto course and at customized, on-site SYT courses throughout the world – most recently in Manitoba, Canada; The Hague, Netherlands; and Anchorage, Alaska.

Ombudsman of Portugal and Turkey launch partnership under EU program
The partnership between the Ombudsman of Portugal and his Turkish counterpart was officially launched on Monday 12th of November in Ankara with a kick-off meeting between the teams from both institutions. The meeting followed the Portuguese Ombudsman selection by the European Union for a twinning project to reinforce the technical training of the Turkish Ombudsman staff.

A poldershop is an informal and open setting to discuss a specific topic. On 12 and 13 November 2018 a Poldershop on communications took place in The Hague. It was organized by the Dutch Ombudsman as part of the exchange of experiences in the IOI European Region.

Advisory Council on the Prevention of Torture discussed system of the deprivation of liberty
Current challenges on guarantying the rights of persons deprived of liberty were discussed during the extended session of the Advisory Council on the Prevention of Torture. Particularly, fundamental issues with regard to the new procedure of the early conditional release were dealt with, such as ensuring the right of access to court.

Thai and Indonesian Ombudsman strengthen bilateral ties through second-phase MOU signing
During 10 – 12 October 2018, Thai Ombudsman Viddhavat Rajatanun welcomed a delegation from the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia led by Ombudsman Amzulian Rifai, to sign a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia.

La Procuración Penitenciaria y la Defensoría del Pueblo de la Provincia de Buenos Aires firmaron el pasado 22 de noviembre un convenio de cooperación con el objetivo de comenzar a realizar acciones en conjunto para la mejora de la protección de los derechos humanos de las personas privadas de libertad.
