    Hungarian Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, Professor Máté Szabó, delivered a speech on the Hungarian ombudsman system at the Control Yuan plenary meeting. To learn more about Control Yuan, Dr. Szabó furthermore exchanged ideas with members of Control Yuan.

    Personnel Change within IOI General Secretariat

    After three years during which she has contributed significantly to the successful development of the IOI, Ms Christine Stockhammer has resigned from her position as Head of the IOI General Secretariat to take up an appointment as a spokesperson for the City of Vienna. She is followed by Ms Ulrike Grieshofer.

    According to the instructions of the Commissioner for Human Rights Elmira Suleymanova, the members of Guba Regional Office of NPM established in accordance with Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment conducted visit to temporary detention place of Gusar District Police Office Detainees were interviewed; their rights were explained to them.

    Second International Ombudsman Conference

    Several representatives of IOI member institutions will participate in the 2nd Curaçao International Ombudsman Conference held from 4 to 8 June 2012 in Curaçao. It is organized by the Office of the Ombudsman of Curaçao and the Caribbean International University in cooperation with the Institute of Latin-American Ombudsman and the Office of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Argentina, Province Santa Fé.

    Control Yuan releases annual report 2011

    Chien-shien Wang, President of the Control Yuan, recently published the latest annual report. The 2011 report contains the summary of the Control Yuan's work including handling complaints and assuring good governance, sunshine acts, auditing, human rights protection, and international engagement.

    Expansion of ombudsman's authorities discussed

    Ombudsman of Ontario, Andre Marin called for the Province of Ontario to give his office the authority to oversee institutions in the so-called MUSH sectors. They include municipalities, universities, school boards, hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities, police services and children's aid societies.

    Ombudsman delivers annual report to Parliament

    On 17th May 2012, the Portuguese Ombudsman, Alfredo José de Sousa, delivered to the President of the Parliament his Annual Report of Activities concerning the year of 2011. The Ombudsman received 7753 complaints, due to the current economic and financial context one out of five cases opened in 2011 concerned social rights.
