Soledad Becerril new Defensora del Pueblo de España
As of 23 July 2012, Soledad Becerril Bustamante is the new national Ombudswoman of Spain. Her appointment was approved by both Congress and Senate on 17 and 18 July 2012. Becerril is the first woman to take over this position. She has longstanding experience in the political field. In 1981 she became the first female Minister by assuming the department of culture.

El pasado 8 de octubre un grupo de 34 oficiales militares de alto rango procedentes de Centro y Sudamérica visitaron el Yuan de Control. Allí mantuvieron un encuentro con la presidenta Po-ya Chang, el secretario general Meng-rong Fu y el subsecretario general Wen-shih Liu y conocieron más acerca de los cinco poderes del Gobierno de acuerdo con la Constitución, así como las funciones y poderes del YC.

EU Charter of Fundamental Rights marks its 10th anniversary
On 1 December 2019, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights will celebrate its 10th anniversary since it became legally binding, with the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty on 1 December 2009. To mark this anniversary, the European Commission, together with the Finnish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), held a conference on 12 November 2019, with the aim of looking at how to improve the use and awareness of the Charter to bringing it to life for citizens in the EU.

Última jornada de capacitación sobre el Protocolo de Estambul
El pasado miércoles 13 de noviembre se realizó el último encuentro para promover el cumplimiento del Protocolo de Estambul en la Academia Nacional de Medicina, el taller “Aportes de la medicina en la prevención y sanción de la tortura” organizado por la Procuración Penitenciaria de la Nación Argentina (PPN). El taller fue parte del proyecto “Fortalecimiento de las capacidades de los Mecanismos Nacionales de Prevención de la Tortura" que cuenta con el apoyo del Fondo OPCAT de Naciones Unidas. Nuevamente se utilizó la modalidad de práctico-ateneo II donde se presentaron dos casos de tortura.

Forbidding smoking in cells at Helsinki Prison
According to Deputy-Ombudsman Pasi Pölönen, more precise regulation is required concerning smoking bans in prisons. Any lack of clarity in regulations should be urgently rectified because the health of personnel working in prisons and of prisoners who do not smoke must be safeguarded.

Serbia hosts 9th Council of Europe NPM workshop
As of 1 July 2012 the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) operates as National Preventive Mechanism within the OPCAT-regime. With regard to these new tasks the AOB attended the expert workshop on “Irregular migrants, Frontex and the NPMs” on 12 and 13 June 2012 in Belgrade as an observer.

Joint annual report of the Netherlands' Ombudsman Institutions
The National Ombudsman of the Netherlands, the Ombudsman for Children and the Ombudsman for Veterans have just published a joint Annual Report 2018. The report includes a number of case studies which illustrate their work.
