The newly admitted IOI member, the Ethiopian Institution of the Ombudsman (EIO), organized a workshop for federal and regional government offices’ public relations heads to discuss the implementation of the Access to Information Law. The workshop also focused on the reports regarding the implementation of the law that government bodies have to submit to the EIO.

Vulnerable elderly woman suffers severe facial bruising in hospital that failed her
A woman in her 90s suffered serious bruising to her face just before she died after falling in hospital, a Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman investigation found. The vulnerable lady was admitted to hospital with a chest infection and suffered severe bruising to her face when she fell out of bed, when an agency health care assistant was changing her bedding.

Alberta Ombudsman begins duties as Public Interest Commissioner
Mr. Peter Hourihan, Ombudsman for the Canadian province of Alberta, was recently appointed the province’s first Public Interest Commissioner. The office was formally launched 1 June, 2013 after new legislation, the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower) Act, came into force.

Ombudsman issues reprimands to doctors for operating on patient against her will
Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen has issued reprimands to two doctors at a central hospital as well as to a hospital district for an unlawful action. In addition, he has recommended that the hospital district make recompense to the patient for the violations of her fundamental and human rights to which she was subjected.

Ombudsman on financing needs of inmates in psychiatric institutions
With little money to spend, inmates in residential institutions are compelled to be “creative” – found Ombudsman Máté Szabó in his recent report. The sum of the spending money which inmates receive remained the same, although prices of the most preferred consumer goods, had increased many times. As a consequence, inmates are compelled to barter among themselves.
