New Powers for Public Services Ombudsman for Wales
From 1 November 2014, the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales’s jurisdiction changed. This is as a result of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. He now has an extended role in relation to care homes, domiciliary care and palliative care services.

The Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, participated in the day ‘Gender violence among teenagers: the new technologies as a tool’. There she called for the improvement of risk detection instruments for battered women, “so that the possibilities of attack are reduced”.

Ombudsman to investigate how public hospitals handle complaints
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has today, 13 June 2014, announced an investigation into how complaints are handled by public hospitals in Ireland and has asked members of the public for their assistance. The Ombudsman’s wide ranging investigation will look at how public hospitals across the State manage and investigate complaints from patients and their families.

Open meetings notice time disputed
The question of what constitutes a 24-hour notice to the public under Iowa’s open-meetings law became an issue of contention a few days ago. Ombudsman Ruth Cooperrider warned that the Iowa Public Information Board’s ruling opens the door for Iowa governments to elude the requirements of the law, whose intention it is that the information must be easily accessible to the public for at least 24 hours before meetings are held.
