Ensure follow-up to Ombudswoman’s recommendations and the access to information
On 13 July 2022, the European Commission published its third annual Rule of Law Report, providing an overview of the trends in this area in the European Union. For the first time, the Report contains specific recommendations to member states, including Croatia. One of them calls for Croatia to ensure a more systematic follow-up to recommendations and information requests of the Ombudsperson.

Ombudsmen alert about artificial intelligence and human rights
The Catalan Ombudsman and the IOI started a debate in Europe on artificial intelligence and human rights in Barcelona. The conference brought together institutions, experts, business representatives, Ombudsman and representatives of human rights structures. Participants consider it necessary and urgent to regulate the guarantee of human rights in international treaties, which could be violated by the application of artificial intelligence.

DPU Advocates for Women Victims of Domestic Violence Accused of International Child Abduction
On Wednesday, 13 November, at the National Congress, the Federal Public Defenders’ Office (DPU) called for greater recognition of the plight of women who, as victims of domestic violence, are accused of international child abduction. Federal Public Defender Daniela Brauner participated in two public hearings held at the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, addressing the application of the Hague Convention in cases where Brazilian mothers return to Brazil with their children after fleeing domestic violence.

Board of Directors holds first electronic meeting due to Covid-19
On 18 May 2020 the IOI Board of Directors held its annual meeting to identify and discuss projects and priorities for the upcoming membership year. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the Board held its annual meeting by electronic means for the first time and despite the challenge of a wide range of different time zones, 15 out of currently 20 Directors joined the videoconference hosted by the Office of IOI President and Ireland Ombudsman Peter Tyndall.

UNESCO calls for COVID-19 vaccines to be considered a global public good
UNESCO’s International Bioethics Committee (IBC) and the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) have called for a change of course in current COVID-19 vaccination strategies, urging that vaccines be treated as a global public good to ensure they are made equitably available in all countries, and not only to those who bid the highest for these vaccines. Both committees have a long track record in providing ethical guidance on sensitive issues.
