Female prisoners in Victoria’s main women’s prison are being routinely strip searched, in what Ombudsman Deborah Glass has described as a “humiliating, degrading and undignified practice”. Tabling the Implementing OPCAT in Victoria: report and inspection of the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Victorian Parliament, Ms Glass said an independent inspection had uncovered some serious issues.

La Defensoría de Niñas, Niños y Adolescentes de Santa Fe junto a la Defensoría del Pueblo de Santa Fe y UNICEF Argentina realizaron la jornada taller sobre el rol de las Defensorías en el abordaje del consumo problemático de sustancias. La actividad se desarrolló en la ciudad de Santa Fe en el marco del último plenario anual de la Asociación de Defensores del Pueblo de la República Argentina (Adpra) donde también se abordaron otros temas.

An international conference on “Comparative Indicators for Measuring Progress in Human Rights” was co-organized in Uzbekistan by UN, OSCE, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation and the National Center on Human Rights of Uzbekistan. The Head of the Ombudsman's Unit for Civil and Political Rights attended the event.

El Defensor del Pueblo (e.f.), Francisco Fernández Marugán, ha iniciado una actuación de oficio con todas las Comunidades Autónomas y las Ciudades Autónomas de Ceuta y Melilla para examinar las características y dotación de las residencias de mayores. Al Defensor del Pueblo le preocupa especialmente la situación de estas personas y considera que la edad de la población y la aplicación de la Ley de Dependencia convierten a los servicios de atención residencial en un elemento fundamental en la atención a estas personas.

A l’occasion de la journée internationale des droits de l’enfant, le 20 novembre, le Défenseur des droits, M. Jacques Toubon, et la Défenseure des enfants, Mme Geneviève Avenard, son adjointe, rendent public leur rapport annuel consacré aux droits de l’enfant. Intitulé « Droits de l’enfant en 2017 : Au miroir de la Convention internationale des droits de l’enfant », ce rapport est consacré au suivi des recommandations de l’ONU, en insistant sur les thématiques du droit à la santé et de l’éducation à la sexualité.

Professor John McMillan AO, Acting New South (NSW) Ombudsman, released his annual report for 2016-17. During the reporting year, the office dealt with a broad range of issues, including public housing maintenance, water regulation, disability accommodation and support services, school student suspensions, debt recovery, guardianship, prisoner health services, and out-of-home care services for children.

2017-11-17New Commonwealth Ombudsman and annual reports published
The Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman (the Office) has produced three annual reports: Commonwealth Ombudsman Annual Report 2016–17, ACT Ombudsman Annual Report 2016–17 and the ACT Judicial Council Annual Report 2016–17 (not published online). This year marked the 40th anniversary of the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman. While it was an occasion to reflect on its many achievements of the past 40 years, the Office looks with excitement to the future.

The IOI has started the first phase of its membership evaluation process, which will be conducted on a rolling basis. The first 60 members have received the evaluation forms in our three official languages and can choose which one suits them best. We highly appreciate your active participation in this confidential evaluation, which has a non-punititve charater. The final report of this membership evaluation process will be presented by the Office of the Secretary General at the 2020 World Conference in Dublin.

New Zealand’s Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier has released his final opinion on the complaint concerning the seclusion of a child at Ruru Specialist School. He underlined that the family had been let down by the school and education agencies, and acknowledged the subsequent changes to legislation that prohibit the use of seclusion in any New Zealand school.
