2011-05-06Ombudsman Board presents Annual Report 2010
"In 2010 the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) took care of the requests of more than 15 000 people, and 6 600 investigation procedures were initiated to control administrative decisions. In more than 17 percent of all investigation procedures the AOB confirmed a case of maladministration," AOB Chair Peter Kostelka summarised last year's activities on the occasion of the annual report presentation on 28 April in Vienna. An international version of the annual report in English highlighting human rights related cases will be published in June 2011.

Ombudsman examines use of taser weapons
The NSW Ombudsman Bruce Barbour is currently reviewing the use of Taser weapons by the NSW police. This is the second review he has conducted. The first was completed in 2008 and related to the use of Tasers by specialist units and senior police.

The survey of complainants’ views compares the survey returns of people who received a decision from the SPSO in the first quarter of this financial year with those who received a decision in the first quarter of last year.

More than 4,000 complaints to ombudsman last year
The Ombudsman received nearly 4,100 complaints last year. In addition, he launched over 60 investigations on his own initiative. Most complaints concerned the police, social welfare and health care, and prisons.

CPT publishes report on periodic visit to Croatia
The CPT-report reviews the treatment of persons detained by the police, the situation of prisoners held in three county prisons (ie Zagreb, Split and Osijek) and the Zagreb Prison Hospital, as well as the treatment of juveniles deprived of their liberty under criminal legislation. The situation of involuntary psychiatric patients is examined in the light of the recently adopted mental health legislation at different psychiatric establishments.

Obituary: Charles Norman Geschke - Victorian Ombudsman
Passed away in Melbourne on 23 July 2018, aged 94. Norman was Victoria’s second Ombudsman, following a distinguished career with the RAAF and six years as Victoria’s first Director of Consumer Affairs. We all strive to make a difference in life, but not too many people can look back on a life quite so well-lived, who helped so many thousands of people, as Charles Norman Geschke, popularly known as Norm.
