At the beginning of June, the Office of the Parliamentary Ombudsmen – JO, was hosting the Nordic Ombudsmen Meeting in the town Ystad in the southern part of Sweden. The Nordic Ombudsmen comprises of Ombudsmen from Denmark, Finland, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

The Ombudsman of Spain asks for a court-appointed lawyer for minors who want their opinions to be considered in legal proceedings. Ombudsman Soledad Becerril presented a paper analysing whether minors’ views are heard adequately in legal proceedings that affect them.

La Defensora del Pueblo, Soledad Becerril, ha presentado en las Cortes Generales un estudio que analiza si los menores son adecuadamente escuchados en los procedimientos judiciales que les afectan, si sus opiniones se toman en cuenta y si se respeta su interés superior, como establece la Convención de Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos del Niño.

Supreme Court Judge elected as new Ombudsman
In 2014 the Norwegian Parliament elected Supreme Court Judge Aage Thor Falkanger as ombudsman for the current parliamentary term (4 years). Flakanger is the fifth ombudsman to be appointed since 1962; he succeeds former Parliamentary Ombudsman Arne Fliflet who left office mid-June 2014.

Depuis 2007, l’Ombudsman de l’Ontario offre un cours de formation Sharpening Your Teeth (SYT) / Aiguisez-vous les dents (ALD) aux enquêteurs, ombudsmen et autres chiens de garde professionnels. Ce cours enseigne des techniques avancées d’enquête qui s’appuient sur les modèles probants conçus par l’Ombudsman de l’Ontario pour la conduite des enquêtes systémiques.

Guido van Woerkom elected as National Ombudsman
Guido van Woerkom has been elected by Parliament as the new National Ombudsman of the Netherlands. Mr Van Woerkom follows former Nation Ombudsman Alex Brenninkmeijer and will take office in November 2014.

Québec Ombudsman calls for fair and rigorous oversight of the admission of foreign patients
In an intervention report released today, the Québec Ombudsman concludes that admission in December 2011 of a foreign national in a Montreal Health Care institution occurred outside normal channels and without government supervision.

Le Protecteur du citoyen du Québec demande un encadrement équitable et rigoureux de l’accueil de patients étrangers
Dans un rapport d’intervention rendu public aujourd’hui, le Protecteur du citoyen du Québec conclut que l’admission pour des soins de santé d’une ressortissante étrangère dans un hôpital montréalais, en décembre 2011, s’est faite en dehors des mécanismes habituels d’accès et de tout encadrement gouvernemental. Il craint que la normalisation d’une telle pratique crée des iniquités sur les listes d’attente d’un réseau déjà sollicité de toutes parts.

IOI supports idea of establishing Ombudsman institution in Chile
During the last electoral campaign in Chile, the electoral programmes of both presidential candidates considered the establishment of an Ombudsman institution as one of the oldest and most important instruments for a modern democratic society. The IOI strongly supports the idea of establishing such an ombudsman institution and sent a letter of support to President Michelle Bachelet.

Moreover, it also presents case examples highlighting the tangible effects of the CY’s work on the current administration.

16e anniversaire de l’Association des Ombudsmans et Médiateurs de la Francophonie
Le 20 mai marquait l’anniversaire de la fondation de l’AOMF. Si 18 membres fondateurs adoptèrent les premiers Statuts, le 20 mai 1998 à Nouakchott en Mauritanie, c’est aujourd’hui une cinquantaine de membres provenant d’Afrique, d’Amérique, d’Asie, et d’Europe qui travaillent quotidiennement à l’amélioration de la qualité des services publics.
