Norwegian Parliamentary Ombudsman Aage Thor Falkanger was re-elected for another term of four years by the Parliament in November 2017. The Ombudsman is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament to safeguard the rights of individual citizens in their dealings with the public administration.

On 6 December 2017, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) published its “Second European Union Minorities and Discrimination Survey (EU-MIDIS II): main results” report. Nearly a decade since FRA carried out a similar survey, the findings underline the need for specific and stronger measures to provide legal protection against discrimination coupled with effective sanctions.

2017-12-11Much support for Polish High Commissioner of Human Rights for the institutions‘ anniversary
IOI Secretary General Günther Kräuter congratulated Polish Ombudsman Adam Bodnar in Warsaw for the 30th anniversary of his institution. He furthermore stressed the importance of independence of Ombudsman institutions. IOI Europe president Rafael Ribo also expressed his concern about the human rights situation in Poland and other European countries.

2017-12-04Petri Jääskeläinen continues as Ombudsman
Doctor of Laws Petri Jääskeläinen has been re-elected to serve as Parliamentary Ombudsman for a term of four years. His term will begin on 1 January 2018 and end on 31 December 2021. The election of Dr. Jääskeläinen was confirmed at the plenary session on 21 November 2017. Dr. Jääskeläinen was the only person who had submitted his candidature for the post.

2017-12-04La Defensoría del Pueblo de Santa Fe atendió más de 1.100 casos de mujeres víctimas de violencia en los últimos doce meses
La cifra fue dada a conocer por el Defensor del Pueblo, Raúl Lamberto, durante una conferencia de prensa realizada este martes en la ciudad de Santa Fe, en el marco del Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer que se conmemoró el 25 de noviembre pasado. Del total, más de 600 casos corresponden al Centro de Asistencia a la Víctima de la ciudad de Rosario y 225 al de la capital provincial.

2017-12-04Investigation into the management of maintenance claims against public housing tenant
As a result of a number of complaints to the Ombudsman and wider community concern, the Ombudsman conducted an investigation into the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Housing's processes for determining and pursuing maintenance debts against public housing tenants. The investigation found that many public housing tenants were charged thousands of dollars for the repair of damaged public housing, even when there was no evidence they caused the damage. The investigation also found that the department was wasting public resources and breaching its responsibility as a Model Litigant by making unreasonable demands for cost recovery and pursing claims to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

2022-08-11Ontario Ombudsman publishes Annual Report 2021-2022
Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé on August 10, 2022 reported that public concerns and complaints to the provincial watchdog have returned almost to pre-pandemic levels. His office fielded 25,161 complaints and inquiries in fiscal 2021-2022, an increase of 25% over the previous year. Most (52%) were resolved in two weeks or less.

2017-11-30Concern about routine strip searching and high incidence of force and restraint in women’s prison
Female prisoners in Victoria’s main women’s prison are being routinely strip searched, in what Ombudsman Deborah Glass has described as a “humiliating, degrading and undignified practice”. Tabling the Implementing OPCAT in Victoria: report and inspection of the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Victorian Parliament, Ms Glass said an independent inspection had uncovered some serious issues.

La actividad se desarrolló en la ciudad de Santa Fe en el marco del último plenario anual de la Asociación de Defensores del Pueblo de la República Argentina (Adpra) donde también se abordaron otros temas.

An international conference on “Comparative Indicators for Measuring Progress in Human Rights” was co-organized in Uzbekistan by UN, OSCE, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation and the National Center on Human Rights of Uzbekistan. The Head of the Ombudsman's Unit for Civil and Political Rights attended the event.

La intensificación del proceso de urbanización en años recientes, ha motivado la escasez de recursos didácticos para los estudiantes de las zonas rurales, abriendo aún más la brecha entre las zonas rurales y las zonas urbanas. Por este motivo, el Yuan de Control (YC) inició una investigación sobre los problemas de la educación en zonas rurales, la situación de los recursos asignados y su eficacia.
