Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman publishes summary of investigations
The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has published 161 summaries of investigations it carried out between April and June this year. The Ombudsman Service investigates complaints about the NHS in England and UK government departments and their agencies, such as the Child Maintenance Service and the DVLA. The published summaries include 35 governmental cases and 126 are healthcare.

Expulsion of special education needs student
In March Ombudsman Ron Paterson released an opinion under the Ombudsmen Act about an investigation into a decision by a school Board of Trustees to expel a high school student with Aspergers. Following an incident where the year 11 student had threatened to assault a teacher the Board had expelled him for “gross misconduct” that was “a harmful or dangerous example to other students”.

The detention of asylum-seekers and migrants represents a growing human rights challenge worldwide. The Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) therefore produced a practical manual on monitoring immigration detention, which is now available online.
