Ombudsman Peter Tyndall Monday opened a new family and patient room at the Mater Hospital, Dublin. The family room is part of the Mater’s “end of life” care service and will give families who are losing a loved one a quiet, comfortable and private space where they can also stay the night.

Commonwealth Ombudsman released NDIA report
Commonwealth Ombudsman Michael Manthorpe released a report on the 15 May 2018 into the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) handling of reviews of decisions under the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013. The report discusses systemic issues highlighted by complaints and stakeholder feedback including significant backlogs, delays in decision making and poor communication practices.

New Director for the Ombudsman’s Office
The State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel, Judge (Ret.) Joseph H. Shapira, has selected Dr. Esther Ben-Haim, or Esti as she is called by her peers, to be the new Director of the Ombudsman’s Office. Her nomination been approved by the State Audit Committee of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) in November of 2017.

Ombudsman meets colleagues from Poland and other Baltic states
On 21-22 May, Ombudsman, head of Children Rights Division and lawyer of Prevention Unit meet Children Ombudsmen of Poland and Lithuania and representatives of the Chancellor of Justice Office of Estonia. Such meetings happen annually and participants discuss topical children rights issues in Poland and Baltic states.

El Defensor del Pueblo (e.f.), Francisco Fernández Marugán, ha recomendado a la Comisaría General de Extranjería y Fronteras que imparta instrucciones para que se establezca un sistema de registro de las solicitudes de asilo en los Centros de Internamiento de Extranjeros (CIE) que cumpla con la Ley de Procedimiento Administrativo Común.

New guidance for the Victorian public sector on how to deal with challenging behavior
Victorian government departments, local councils and other agencies dealing with challenging behaviour from members of the public will benefit from a new guide tabled in the Victorian Parliament today. Tabling her Good Practice Guide to Dealing with Challenging Behaviour, Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the guide aimed to help create better understanding between government bodies and the public.

The Czech Equality Body publishes the summary report 2017
The Equality Body of the Czech Republic – the Ombudswoman – published the summary report for the year 2017 informing about her main activities in the field of protection against discrimination. The Ombudswoman received 384 complaints concerning discrimination in 2017, most of them from the area of work and employment. In the year 2017, people mostly complained about discrimination on the grounds of disability. Ombudswoman established discrimination in 40 individual cases.

Reunión del Observatorio de la Vulnerabilidad del Síndic
El Observatorio de la Vulnerabilidad del Síndic ha analizado en la reunión de hoy las modificaciones al Estatuto de Personas con Discapacidad de la Comunidad Valenciana. Para ello, hemos contado con el testimonio del presidente del CERMI en la Comunitat Valenciana, Luis Vañó que se ha felicitado por el consenso alcanzado en les Corts Valencianes a la hora de adecuar el Estatuto de las Personas con Discapacidad a la Convención de Naciones Unidas sobre Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidad, siendo la primera comunidad autónoma en hacerlo.

El Defensor del Pueblo, Raúl Lamberto, quien además es autor de proyectos de Reforma de la Constitución Provincial en los que propuso la figura del Defensor en el texto de la carta constitucional, será el coordinador de la jornada de debate que realizará la institución bajo la consigna “La Defensoría del Pueblo en la Reforma Constitucional: derechos ciudadanos y métodos de pacificación”.

El Síndic constata el déficit de vivienda social y pide más coordinación para dar respuesta
El síndic, Rafael Ribó, ha pedido a las administraciones catalanas competentes en temas de vivienda la suma de esfuerzos para gestionar de forma coordinada la demanda creciente de viviendas sociales ante la falta de un parque público suficiente (en Cataluña no llega al 2%) y la actuación poco comprometida del Gobierno del Estado y de las entidades financieras con los colectivos más vulnerables.

Regional meeting held in New Zealand
The IOI’s Australasian & Pacific Region (APOR) held a conference on 13 October 2022 and its 34th annual members’ meeting on 14 October 2022 in Wellington, New Zealand. The conference, on remaining relevant and getting government to listen, was co-hosted by Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass OBE as Regional President and New Zealand Chief Ombudsman and IOI 2nd Vice President Peter Boshier.
