2018-01-03European Region elects new Director
The term of Ms Lucia Franchini as Ombudsman of Tuscany (Italy) ended and as a result, the position of one European Director on the IOI Board of Directors became vacant. According to the European regional by-laws one of the Directors at the European regional Board, Ms Ülle Madise, Chancellor of Justice of Estonia, took over the vacant seat at the IOI Board and elections were held to fill the vacant position on the European regional Board.

Ontario Ombudsman publishes Annual Report 2021-2022
Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé on August 10, 2022 reported that public concerns and complaints to the provincial watchdog have returned almost to pre-pandemic levels. His office fielded 25,161 complaints and inquiries in fiscal 2021-2022, an increase of 25% over the previous year. Most (52%) were resolved in two weeks or less.

| New Secretary General Gaby Schwarz takes office
On 1 August 2022, Ms. Gaby Schwarz took office as the new Secretary General of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI). Ms. Schwarz was sworn in as a member of the Austrian Ombudsman Board on 11 July 2022 and takes over the office of IOI Secretary General from her predecessor Werner Amon, who resigned as Austrian Ombudsman at the end of June 2022.

La Defensoría del Pueblo participó en la “Tercera Consulta Regional para América Latina y el Caribe – Implementación de los principios rectores de Naciones Unidas sobre Empresas y Derechos Humanos” realizada en Santiago de Chile del 12 al 14 de diciembre. Esta consulta constituye un importante espacio para el diálogo y el intercambio de experiencias que se orientan a la efectiva implementación de los Principios Rectores de Naciones Unidas sobre empresas y derechos humanos.

Defensor del Pueblo asume la Presidencia del CCPPDH
El Defensor del Pueblo, Alfredo Castillero Hoyos, asumió la presidencia del Consejo Centroamericano de Procuradores y Procuradoras de los Derechos Humanos (CCPPDH). Este cambio de mando se realizó en el día de hoy en Panamá en presencia de los representantes de los siete países que conforman este organismo: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belice, Honduras y Ecuador.

The Síndic de Greuges de Catalunya (Catalan Ombudsman) has a new incumbent, Ms. Esther Giménez-Salinas i Colomer. Ms. Giménez-Salinas was elected by the Catalan Parliament on 30 June and took office on 14 July 2022.
