    Best Practice Paper on “Giving Voice to Mental Health Patients” now available

    The IOI is pleased to present the next issue of its Best Practice Paper series (BPP). Issue 5 puts a focus on the rights of mental health patients, especially those who are involuntarily detained in psychiatric facilities or required to take medical treatment. The BPP is based on observations made by the Ombudsman of Alberta and the British Columbia Ombudsperson.

    Los Defensores europeos han debatido sobre la coordinación necesaria y los problemas comunes que está generando en la ciudadanía la epidemia de COVD19. En esta reunión on line, impulsada por la Defensora del Pueblo Europeo, Emily O'Reilly, participaron más de 35 defensores del pueblo nacionales y regionales de toda Europa, entre ellos, el Defensor del Pueblo andaluz, Jesús Maeztu, con el fin de compartir el trabajo que están realizando para defender los derechos de las personas en esta crisis.

    La Junta Directiva adopta una resolución sobre Covid-19

    El brote de coronavirus (COVID-19) y el veloz desarrollo de la pandemia ha tenido un impacto enorme en todos nosotros, pero ha tenido un impacto desproporcionado en la personas más vulnerables de nuestras sociedades. El papel del Ombudsman es fundamental para asegurar que cada persona pueda ejercer su derecho a acceder a los servicios públicos y para que estos servicios sean prestados de manera justa. En una resolución que la Junta Directiva del IIO adoptó en su reunión anual celebrada el día 18 de mayo de 2020, el IIO habla de este tema y exhorta a todas las instituciones del Ombudsman para que intensifiquen sus esfuerzos .

These are some of the findings of the Fundamental Rights Agency’s (FRA) recent survey into people’s experiences with different types of crimes. On International Women’s Day, FRA calls for better support for women to ensure they can access their rights.

    Covid-19 - Ombudsman alerts the Government to delays in attributing support to companies

    The Ombudsman sent a letter to the Secretary of State for Social Security and to the Deputy Secretary of State and for Fiscal Affairs, in which she requested that efforts be made in order to overcome the situation experienced by companies that have been awaiting, for several months now, attribution of extraordinary support for progressive recovery of activity, wherein the justification for the delay lies in the dynamics of articulation between the Institute of Social Security, IP and the Tax and Customs Authority.

    Story of a person who crossed the border of Lithuania: actions equivalent to detention, hunger and harsh behavior

    The shocking story of the experience of a person who crossed the border of Lithuania reached the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas: “I was detained while trying to obtain asylum and did not get an explanation for what reasons my freedom was restricted”. According to the person, the compulsory isolation procedure was more reminiscent of detention, since he was not provided with information in the language he could understand and his requests to isolate in a chosen place of residence were not taken into account.

    2020 Annual Report: 142 Recommendations for Stronger Human Rights Protection

    Ombudswoman Lora Vidović has submitted to the Croatian Parliament her annual report for the year 2020 containing an analysis of the issues faced by the citizens in the exercise of their human rights and incidences of discrimination. Its value lies especially in its 142 recommendations, mostly issued to the competent state administration bodies and aimed at achieving stronger human rights protection in virtually all areas of life.

    Poland must apply internationally recognized standards to ensure Ombudsman can operate without interruption

    In view of current developments in Poland, the IOI reissues its official letter of support from October 2020, stating its opinion on provisions regulating the transitional period until a new office holder will be elected for the position of the Polish Commissioner for Human Rights. Poland must apply and consider internationally recognized standards such as the Venice Principles to ensure that the Ombudsman institution is able to fulfil its mandate without interruption in the service of the citizens of Poland.
