Open letter concerning Mediterranean refugee crisis
The tragic events of the past months where hundreds of people lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea have filled the world with tremendous shock. Behind this humanitarian disaster lies a deep human rights crisis, where migrants try to flee from war or poverty. The IOI therefore calls on its members in an open letter to encourage their respective governments and administrations to join forces to find solutions for this refugee crisis.

Ombudsman publishes Complaint Investigation Reports
This month the Scottish Ombudsman Jim Martin is laying four reports before the Scottish Parliament – three about the NHS and one about Scottish Water. He is laying a report on 61 decisions about all of the sectors under his remit.

NI Ombudsman presents Human Rights Manual to Ombudsman staff
Deputy Northern Ireland Ombudsman Marie Anderson together with the Director of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, Ms Virginia McVea, presented the results of a joint project on a “Human Rights-based approach to the Ombudsman work” to staff members from the Austrian Ombudsman Board in Vienna.

Administrations accepted 72% of Ombudsman’s recommendations
Ombudsman Becerril presented the institution’s Annual Report for 2014. The Office received 23,186 and made 467 recommendations, 72% of which were accepted by the public administration.

The IOI’s European Region carried out two surveys among its members. One survey focused on “Own Initiative Investigations” and the other one dealt with the “Implementation of the ADR Directive”, i.e. the EU’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Directive.

Too many people dying without dignity, Ombudsman service report finds
End of life care could be improved for up to 355,000 people a year in England, according to a report published by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. The report highlights tragic cases where people's suffering could have been avoided or lessened with the right care and treatment, as they approached the end of their lives.

Anti-Corruption training in Curaçao

New South Australian Ombudsman appointed
Mr Wayne Lines has recently been appointed as the South Australian Ombudsman (effective from 18 December 2014). Mr Lines is just the sixth Ombudsman appointed since the establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman in 1972.

New Human Rights Defender appointed
On 23 February 2016, Mr Arman Tatoyan has been elected as Human Rights Defender of Armenia. Mr Tatoyan follows the former Human Rights Defender Karen Andreasian, who resigned in January 2016.

Federal Ombudsman redresses 152,000 complaints
The Federal Ombudsman’s office has decided complaints filed by 152,000 Pakistanis living abroad over the past two years and at present there is no complaint pending a decision. Moreover, it has been decided that video link facility will be provided to overseas Pakistanis for the hearing of their complaints.

The Ombudsman, Ms Connie Lau, declared today (May 7) a direct investigation into the Lands Department (LandsD)’s system of regularisation of illegal occupation of Government land and breach of lease conditions. The aim is to identify any impropriety involved.
