In a report tabled on February 18, 2016, the Québec Ombudsman concluded that the detention conditions of detainees in Nunavik, a territority located north of the 55th parallel in Québec, are unnacceptable and that crime prevention measures are woefully lacking.

Czech ombudsman criticises conditions in refugee facility
The severe conditions which children and families with children have to endure in Bělá-Jezová constitute a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Objectively speaking, children in the facility have worse living conditions than inmates in Czech prisons. Bělá-Jezová is a former military facility where the living conditions are, in many ways, much worse than those in Czech prisons.

The Ombudsman is a core institution of modern government with a role to promote and protect human rights, contribute to the maintenance of the rule of law and as a pathway to accessible, timely and effective administrative justice. As the Ombudsman has a significant role to keep the executive government to account, the Ombudsman and the Ombudsman’s office must act, and be seen to act, with a high degree of integrity and accountability.

Ombudsman begins taking complaints about school boards September 1
Beginning with September 1, the Ontario Ombudsman is officially able to take complaints about the province’s 82 school boards. The historic new expansion of the Ombudsman’s mandate was granted with the passage of Bill 8, the Public Sector and MPP Accountability and Transparency Act, 2014.

Rules governing donations to political candidates in Victoria are inadequate and should be reformed to protect both public confidence in the electoral system and the reputation of people standing for election. Study visit of Macedonian delegation at Austrian Ombudsman Board
A delegation of the Macedonian NPM and the Macedonian Ombudsman visited the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) as part of a “Twinning-Light”-Project. The Macedonian Delegation had the chance to learn about the work of the Austrian NPM, when dealing with Asylum-seekers and migrants. The Twinning-Light-Project is co-organised by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights and co-funded by the EU.
