How to build and maintain independence
Possibly the most important element to the success of an Ombudsman is the office’s independence. It must not be, or be seen to be, answerable to the government of the day or to the agencies within the office’s jurisdiction. At the same time, the office must also not be or be seen to be a community advocate. The Ombudsman must clearly be acting in the public interest at all times.

Uzbek Senate elects new ombudsman
The Senate of Uzbekistan on May 15 elected Ulugbek Mukhammadiev as ombudsman of Oliy Majlis (...) Ulugbek Mukhammadiev, born in 1971, until now was the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs and Inter-parliamentary Relations of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan. He is also a member of the Democratic Party of Uzbekistan Milliy Tiklanish (National Revival).

Department sought repayment of €25,000 from man after his land flooded
A man complained to Ombudsman Peter Tyndall after the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine sought to recover a grant of over €25,000 from him following flooding of his land in Kerry. The man had received a grant under the Department’s Afforestation Scheme to establish a forest on his land. However the forest had been destroyed following severe flooding in 2009.

Ombudsman Hong Kong presents two investigation reports
The Office of The Ombudsman held a press conference on 28 January 2016 to announce the results of a direct investigation report and a complaint investigation report, namely “Government’s Implementation of Strengthened Control of Exhaust Emissions from Petrol and LPG Vehicles” and “Handling of Food Safety Complaints by Food and Environmental Hygiene Department”. The press conference also covered a brief report on the work of the Office for the year of 2015 (January to December 2015).

New Ontario Ombudsman takes office
New Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé took his oath of office today, beginning a five-year term as the province’s independent, impartial watchdog. Mr. Dubé is the province’s seventh Ombudsman since the office was established in 1975.
