Office of Investigator General transitions from an executive Ombudsman to a Parliamentary Ombudsman
The Office of the Ombudsman in Zambia has undergone a number of changes, which will be beneficial to the public in terms of more efficient and effective service delivery. On 5 January 2016, His Excellency Mr Edgar C. Lungu, the President of the Republic of Zambia signed the Constitution Bill Number 17 of 2015 which amongst other clauses changed the Office of the Investigator General to the Office of the Public Protector.

Ombudsman presents strategic intentions 2016-2020
In June 2016 New Zealand Chief Ombudsman Judge Peter Boshier published his Strategic Intentions for 2016-2020. The new targets of the Office include to eliminate its backlog of aged complaints and to deal with the majority of new complaints (70%) within three months.

Ombudsman hosts regional seminar as part of outreach events
On Friday 23 September Irish Ombudsman and IOI 2nd Vice-President Peter Tyndall hosted a seminar in the south-west town of Tralee, County Kerry for local groups on the importance of learning from complaints.

Prisoners should have access to independent complaints body
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has welcomed the recommendation by Inspector of Prisons, Judge Michael Reilly, that the Ombudsman be given the powers to investigate complaints from prisoners. Judge Reilly was speaking at ‘The Ombudsman behind Bars’ conference in Dublin on Thursday 12 May. The conference heard that Ireland is breaching human rights by not allowing adult prisoners have their complaints independently investigated.

Control Yuan signs cooperation agreement with Médiateur du Faso
A delegation led by the head of Médiateur du Faso, Ms. Alima Déborah Traore, visited the Control Yuan (CY) on the morning of March 8, 2016. They first met with CY President Dr. Chang Po-ya at her office; then the two sides signed a cooperation agreement in the CY plenary meeting. Ms. Traore also expressed her sympathy to the affected in the great earthquake that struck Tainan last month, and observed a minute’s silence before delivering a speech on the same occasion.

Improving public services with systemic and own motion investigations
People are often relcuctant to come forward to the Ombudsman because they fear negative consequences. Therefore, it is important that an Ombudsman is able to undertake investigations on his or her own initiative. On occasions, the Ombudsman will be made or become aware of possible maladministration where no complaint has been made. Such investigations often consider systemic issues and ensure that the Ombudsman can be effective in tackling poor administration and improving public services.
