    Correctional Investigator concerned by rising use of force incidents involving inflammatory agents

    Ottawa, October 31, 2016 – The 43rd Annual Report of the Office of the Correctional Investigator was tabled today in Parliament. The report documents that security incidents in federal prisons involving inflammatory agents, primarily Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) or pepper spray, has tripled since 2011/12.

    New Acting Correctional Investigator of Canada appointed

    Dr. Ivan Zinger has been appointed as the Acting Correctional Investigator of Canada. The duration of this appointment is for a term of one year or until such time that a new Correctional Investigator is appointed. Mr Zinger followed Howard Sapers, who was appointed Independent Advisor on Corrections Reform to the Ontario provincial government and who had served as the Correctional Investigator from 2004 to 2016.

    Ombudsman issued reprimand to police concerning searches of domiciles

    Deputy-Ombudsman Jussi Pajuoja has published three decisions in which he criticises the actions of the police when carrying out searches of domiciles. One of the searches was carried out because of a suspected offence and the other two in order to find a defendant who was ordered to be brought before a district court.

    New acting Commonwealth Ombudsman

    Mr Richard Glenn has been appointed as the Acting Commonwealth Ombudsman. Mr Glenn followed Colin Neave, who ended his term in December 2016 and who had served on the IOI Board of Directors as President of the IOI’s Australasian and Pacific Region from 2015 to 2016.

    Recordatorio - Invitación a participar en una encuesta para el proyecto OPRAS

    El Defensor del Pueblo de los Servicios Públicos de Irlanda del Norte y el profesor Chris Gill (Universidad de Glasgow) están llevando a cabo un proyecto de investigación conjunto que examina el papel de los defensores del pueblo en la protección de los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo (el proyecto OPRAS). La encuesta correspondiente, cuyo objetivo es conocer el trabajo de los defensores del pueblo en este ámbito e identificar buenas prácticas, sigue abierta hasta el 27 de septiembre de 2024.     Ombudsman criticizes authority after visit to Alytus Correction House

    Having assessed the human rights situation in Alytus Correction House, the Seimas Ombudsman Mr. A. Normantas noted that there is not enough space for inmates in wheelchairs to move freely within the cells. The bathrooms are too narrow, and the stairs leading to a canteen and library as well as the odontologist, family doctor and psychologist are not adjusted for the use of people with disabilities.
