Follow-up NPM workshop in Vilnius from 21-23 June 2016
The IOI is pleased to inform its members that the training cooperation established with the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) will find its continuation in a follow-up NPM workshop with a special focus on the monitoring of psychiatric facilities. The workshop will be hosted by the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office of the Republic of Lithuania in Vilnius from 21 to 23 June 2016 and registration is now open.

Successful follow-up NPM workshop held in Vilnius
A follow-up NPM Workshop was hosted by the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office of the Republic of Lithuania. The three-day workshop brought 25 participants from 17 different countries to Vilnius to explore issues of common concern relating to the monitoring of psychiatric institutions.

Guiding principles
The Ombudsman is a core institution of modern government with a role to promote and protect human rights, contribute to the maintenance of the rule of law and as a pathway to accessible, timely and effective administrative justice. As the Ombudsman has a significant role to keep the executive government to account, the Ombudsman and the Ombudsman’s office must act, and be seen to act, with a high degree of integrity and accountability.

New Powers for Public Services Ombudsman for Wales
From 1 November 2014, the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales’s jurisdiction changed. This is as a result of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. He now has an extended role in relation to care homes, domiciliary care and palliative care services.
