    Public Protector investigates refurbishment of dilapidated Umzimkhulu Memorial Hall

Busisiwe Mkhwebane is conducting an own-initiative investigation into allegations of maladministration, corruption and imprudent use of public funds by the Umzimkhulu Municipality in connection with the appointment and payment of service providers for the refurbishment of the dilapidated Umzimkhulu Memorial Hall.

    Public Services Ombudsman for Wales Report: North Wales patient death following substandard care

    The care of a North Wales patient has been branded ‘substandard’ by the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales following his untimely death at Ysbyty Gwynedd. Commenting on the report, Ombudsman Nick Bennett finds it extremely concerning that the Health Board refuses to admit that had they approached the patient’s care differently, this death could have been prevented.

    New Commissioner of Official Languages takes office

    Raymond Théberge took office as Commissioner of Official Languages on January 29, 2018. He has a PhD in linguistics from McGill University, a master’s degree in applied linguistics from the University of Ottawa and a bachelor’s degree in history from the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface. He held a number of leadership positions before coming to the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, and he has significant experience with official language minority communities. He also has extensive experience in academia and has worked across Canada.

    Tender for IOI regional subsidies 2017/2018

    In its efforts to further increase the regional impact of the IOI, the members of the IOI Board of Directors decided at their recent Board meeting in Vienna to continue the regional subsidy programme for the membership year 2017/2018. Institutional members wishing to apply for a regional subsidy can submit project proposal until 1 September 2017.

    Ombudsman Kräuter welcomes South Korean delegation in Vienna

    As part of a study visit to Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, a delegation from South Korea visited the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) on 5 September 2017. The delegation was chaired by Chul-Young Shin, Ombudsman of Gangwon Province, and included representatives from the audit division and general civil service offices of different South Korean cities. The visit served as a platform for a fruitful exchange of experiences between the AOB and the South Korean delegation.

    Petri Jääskeläinen continues as Ombudsman

    Doctor of Laws Petri Jääskeläinen has been re-elected to serve as Parliamentary Ombudsman for a term of four years. His term will begin on 1 January 2018 and end on 31 December 2021. The election of Dr. Jääskeläinen was confirmed at the plenary session on 21 November 2017. Dr. Jääskeläinen was the only person who had submitted his candidature for the post.

    Ombudsman submits Annual Report for 2016

    Victoria Pearman, Ombudsman for Bermuda, submitted her Annual Report for the calendar year 2016 to the Office of the Speaker of the House of Assembly in accordance with her statutory duty under the Ombudsman Act 2004. The Ombudsman's Annual Report for 2016 reports on the work of the Office from 1st January to 31st December 2016.

    Ombudsman sensitizes Police, immigration and Prisons Departments

    The office of the Ombudsman organized a one day sensitization workshop as part of the Ombudsman’s preparations to visit prisons, police cells and other detention centers. The workshop was attended by fifty eight participants from the Police, Immigration and Prisons departments as well as staff of the Ombudsman and Press officers and was held at Senegambia Hotel on 10th August 2017.

    Public Defender appeals to Venice Commission

    The Public Defender of Georgia, Mr Ucha Nanuashvili, has addressed the Venice Commission concerning the draft amendments to the Constitution of Georgia, which had not been taken into account within the framework of the State’s Constitutional Commission, during the evaluating period. In his letter the Public Defender focuses on the amendments aimed at weakening the standards of protection and implementation of fundamental human rights and freedoms enshrined in the current edition of the Constitution.

    Ontario Ombudsman offers special IOI rate for November SYT training

    The Ontario Ombudsman has opened registration for "Sharpening Your Teeth: Advanced Investigative Training for Administrative Watchdogs” training course, and is offering a special rate for IOI members. The course takes place November 5-7, 2018, in Toronto, Ontario and covers investigation planning, interviewing, assessing evidence, report writing, and using digital and social media tools to conduct and publicize an investigation.
