On 8 December 8 2017, Ms Nino Lomjaria started performing her duties as the new Public Defender of Georgia. The Parliament of Georgia elected the sixth Public Defender for a five-year term on 30 November 2017.

Ombudsman meets Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights
The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Mr Anthony C Mifsud received the Council of Europe (CoE) Commissioner for Human Rights Mr Nils Muiznieks. The Commissioner was in Malta, for a two day visit, to monitor the human rights protection standards as part of Malta’s obligation as a CoE Member State. Such visits are aimed at providing Council of Europe Member States with guidelines to raise the standards of human rights protection, in accordance with his mandate.

National Ombudsmans visits colleague in Poland
“Independent, impartial and outreaching”; with these three terms Reinier van Zutphen, National Ombudsman of the Netherlands defined the central task of an ombudsman institute. He did so during a press conference at the office of the Polish ombudsman Mr Adam Bodnar. Mr Van Zutphen is also board member of the European Chapter of the de International Ombudsman Institute (IOI). The Dutch National Ombudsman visited his colleague for a two day meeting sharing best practices and experiences.

Ombudsman community mourns death of Elton Georges
Mr Elton Georges, former Complaints Commissioner of British Virgin Islands, passed away in the evening of 4 April 2018. On behalf of the IOI community, President Tyndall, Secretary General Kräuter and Regional President Arduin expressed their heartfelt condolences to Mr Georges’ family, friends and colleagues.

FRA calls for better protection of fundamental rights of older people
Nearly 60% of Europeans consider being old a disadvantage when looking for work. Societies often view older people as burdens. Too often we overlook the basic human rights of our older people. This year, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) in its 2018 Fundamental Rights Report explores how a rights-based approach towards respect for older people is starting to happen.

Control Yuan holds seniors’ human rights seminar in early response to greying population trend
The Control Yuan (CY) held the 2017 Seniors’ Human Rights Seminar on 29 September, two days ahead of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. Government officials, expert scholars and leading professionals were invited to take part for discussions on issues related to human rights for the elderly.

The IOI Secretary General, Günther Kräuter, attended the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting of the OSCE in Warsaw on 19 September to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
