    Following her election by the People’s Assembly of Albania, Mrs. Erinda Ballanca took oath before the Albanian Parliament and was introduced to the PA staff by her predecessor, Mr. Totozani, on Monday, 19 June 2017.

    Ombudsman: Autism Plus and Department of Health failed to protect group home residents

    Disability services provider Autism Plus and the Department of Health and Human Services put clients at risk by failing to move a group home resident who was accused of sexually assaulting vulnerable housemates. Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the events raised serious concerns about the suitability of Autism Plus to provide programs and care for DHHS clients.

    Mental Health Reform has today launched a new report entitled, The Advocacy Needs of Mental Health Service Users Living in the Community: A Pilot Study. The report examines the need for independent, one-to-one advocacy supports for people who use mental health services and who need help to make decisions or access their rights and entitlements.

He therein reviews the lived experience of ombudsmen in 18 countries. Having had unique access to ENOHE archives and drawing on a network-wide survey, he has produced the comprehensive account of European practitioners.

    Ombudsman observes - mental health services in central region require extra efforts

    On 5 December 2017, Malawi Ombudsman Martha Chizuma released a systemic report titled “Out of Sight, Out of Mind.” This is a report on an investigation into allegations of maladministration in the mental health service delivery and injustices on patients with mental disorders in the Central Region of Malawi.The full report is available here.

    Ombudsman to publish prison inspection reports

    On Thursday 6 July, the Chief Ombudsman released his Report on an unannounced inspection of Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison. As a National Preventive Mechanism under OPCAT, the Ombudsman inspects and monitors places of detention to ensure people held there are treated humanely and with dignity. The new practice of publishing these reports has been started in the interests of transparency and accountability.

    Board adopts Vienna Declaration to support colleagues in Argentina

    At its annual meeting in Vienna the IOI Board of Directors adopted a declaration requesting the Congress of Argentina to accelerate procedures to appoint the National Ombudsman – a position which has remained vacant for the past seven years – and the National Ombudsman for Children and Adolescents – a position which remains vacant since its creation in 2005.

    Concern about routine strip searching and high incidence of force and restraint in women’s prison

    Female prisoners in Victoria’s main women’s prison are being routinely strip searched, in what Ombudsman Deborah Glass has described as a “humiliating, degrading and undignified practice”.  Tabling the Implementing OPCAT in Victoria: report and inspection of the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Victorian Parliament, Ms Glass said an independent inspection had uncovered some serious issues.

    Obituary: Charles Norman Geschke - Victorian Ombudsman

    Passed away in Melbourne on 23 July 2018, aged 94. Norman was Victoria’s second Ombudsman, following a distinguished career with the RAAF and six years as Victoria’s first Director of Consumer Affairs. We all strive to make a difference in life, but not too many people can look back on a life quite so well-lived, who helped so many thousands of people, as Charles Norman Geschke, popularly known as Norm.

    NSW Ombudsman releases new report into asbestos

    The New South Wales (NSW) Ombudsman, Professor John McMillan, recently released a report ‘Asbestos: How NSW government agencies deal with the problem’. He found that there are serious gaps in the NSW Government’s response to the health risks posed by asbestos and how it can be handled and disposed of safely. The report follows an earlier NSW Ombudsman report, published in 2010.
