2019-12-02BC Ombudsperson able to investigate whistleblower allegations under new law
Since 1 December 2019 British Colombia, Canada, has a new law that gives current and former provincial government employees a way to bring forward concerns about wrongdoing in workplace. The Public Interest Disclosure Act gives the Ombudsperson a new statutory mandate to conduct whistleblowing investigations if employees do not wish to report those concerns internally to their employer.

2023-07-27Ombudsman publishes special report on return of third country nationals in 2022
In its special report, the Office of the Greek Ombudsman stated, that forced returns of third country nationals to their countries of origin are further reduced in 2022, however, the number of detainees in Pre-removal Centres and Police stations is disproportionately high. At the same time, complaints on illegal pushbacks are rising, reinforcing the EU Commission's proposal to member-states to establish independent border monitoring mechanisms.

The Ombudsman Hong Kong published its 2022/23 Annual report in July 2023. According to the institution, the Office has maintained uninterrupted public access to the services. They met all targets of performance as pledged, with 5,357 complaints received and 5,323 complains concluded in 2022.

Korea’s anti-corruption policies, including the Public Institution Comprehensive Integrity Assessment, were introduced to 189 State Parties during the United Nations Convention against Corruption meeting held in Vienna, from June 12 to 16, 2023. The ACRC shared Korea’s anti-corruption policies and engaged in discussions on internationally pending issues relating to anti-corruption at the 14th UNCAC Implementation Review Group and the 14th Working Group on Prevention meeting.

Following inspections at the minimum-to-high security Christchurch Women's Prison and Wellington's Arohata Prison, Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier called on the Department of Corrections to never again use spit hoods on vulnerable prisoners including young people and disabled people.

On the invitation of Chief Ombudsman of Thailand Mr. Somsak Suwansujarit, the Hon’ble Ombudsman Sindh visited Thailand to attend the IOI Asian Regional Meeting 2023 and International Seminar in Bangkok, Thailand from 9th to 12th July, 2023. This event brought together Ombudsman colleagues of the Asian Region of the IOI.

2023-07-27Ombudsman asks Frontex about role in rescue operations after Greek boat tragedy
European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly has opened an own-initiative inquiry aimed at clarifying Frontex’s role in search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean sea following the drowning of hundreds of people off the coast of Greece on 14 June 2023. Ms O’Reilly has asked to inspect a wide range of documents concerning Frontex’s responsibilities to rescue those in distress at seas.
