Second European Union Minorities and Discrimination Survey - Main results
On 6 December 2017, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) published its “Second European Union Minorities and Discrimination Survey (EU-MIDIS II): main results” report. Nearly a decade since FRA carried out a similar survey, the findings underline the need for specific and stronger measures to provide legal protection against discrimination coupled with effective sanctions.

Public Defender presents NPM Report 2016
On 26 June 2017, the Public Defender of Georgia presented the annual report of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) to the Government, non-governmental and international organizations and foreign diplomatic corps. The event was held in connection with the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, celebrated worldwide on June 26.

Joint mission visits to promote rights of migrants
The four international networks of Ombudsmen (AOM, AOMF, FIO and IOI) committed to the protection and promotion of the rights of migrants by adopting the Tirana Declaration in September 2016. Since then, the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen (AOM) defined its Strategy for 2017 based on these commitments.

International Ombudsman Conference held in Istanbul
In order to develop a common understanding and cooperation among Ombudsman institutions, the International Ombudsman Conference was held in Istanbul from 25 - 26 September 2017. In total 58 representatives from 42 Ombudsman Institutions from all over the world attended the conference.

The Parliamentary Ombudsman attended a symposium discussing fundamental rights issues that are currently high on the Union’s political agenda. The symposium themed ‘2007 – 2017: Is Europe doing enough to protect fundamental rights? – the children perspective’ was organised by the EU Agency for Fundamental Right.

Eight Per Cent Rise In Welsh NHS Complaints, New Ombudsman Figures Reveal
Complaints made to the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales about Welsh NHS bodies have increased by 8% over the past year, according to new figures. The Ombudsman, Nick Bennett, said the continued trend was concerning and called on the National Assembly for Wales to push forward with new Ombudsman legislation that will help drive up standards of public service delivery.

Last call for IOI regional subsidies 2017/18
In its efforts to further increase the regional impact of the IOI, the members of the IOI Board of Directors decided at their recent Board meeting in Vienna to continue the regional subsidy programme for the membership year 2017/2018. Institutional members wishing to apply for a regional subsidy can submit project proposal until 1 September 2017.

Inspector-General of Taxation review into ATO’s Fraud Control Management
The Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT), Mr Ali Noroozi, has accepted the Senate Economics References Committee’s (the Committee) request to examine how the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) addresses the risk of fraud and associated issues. The Committee’s request follows recent events including those relating to Operation Elbrus and allegations of tax fraud that may be linked to abuse of position by a public official. The IGT today announced terms of reference for this review.
