    Best Practice Paper on Ombudsman outreach practices

    The IOI presents a new Best Practice Paper on “Outreach practices from Ombudsman around the world”. The paper builds on the regional exchange prior to and during the 13th IOI World Conference and reflects the results of this exchange among IOI members. It was developed by the office of the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands and presents outreach practices from IOI members across various countries.

    Connecting Ombudsman Procedures and Citizens: Advancing Public Engagement and Accessibility in Hungary

    The Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary has successfully implemented the IOI-supported regional subsidy project “Connecting Ombudsman Procedures and Citizens”. The two-phase initiative aimed at strengthening public awareness of the Ombudsman’s work, particularly in the field of disability rights, and at familiarizing the public with the network of newly established regional offices.

    La Diputada del Común, Lola Padrón, ha solicitado a la Consejería de Presidencia, Administraciones Publicas, Justicia y Seguridad que se adopten las medidas necesarias para que, con la diligencia debida y en estricto cumplimiento de la Ley Canaria de Educación no Universitaria, se proceda a destinar al presupuesto educativo el 5% del producto interior bruto canario, conforme al mínimo que regula la citada Ley. Padrón asegura que es preciso que se cumpla la Ley 6/2014, de 25 de julio, “en aras de alcanzar el logro de los principios rectores del sistema educativo canario”.

    ACRC Announces “2025 Basic Plan for Comprehensive Integrity Assessment of Public Institutions”

    The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC, Chairperson Ryu Chul Whan) finalized the 2025 Basic Plan for the Comprehensive Integrity Assessment of Public Institutions on the 24th of February 2025. A comprehensive integrity evaluation will be conducted for all local councils this year to focus efforts on improving entrenched corruption-prone areas in local settings. The final plan for the comprehensive integrity assessment will be confirmed after gathering opinions from various institutions with the results to be announced in December 2025.

    The Scottish Public Services Ombudsman has launched the first phase of an interactive map. This shows the number of complaints closed in 2022-23 for each Local Authority area in Scotland across the sectors it oversees, mapped against measures of deprivation.

    On 20 March 2025, the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) published the first in a series of Overview Reports which review issues that are creating potential barriers to accessing healthcare. The report ‘Lost in translation’ provides an overview assessment of the provision of Interpretation Services in GP Practices – for patients who are not proficient in English.

    The Office of the Ombudsman has asked women running in the September 2025 General Elections to report any forms of injustices faced in the election process. The Director of Investigations and Research, Ms Martha Kwengwere, said this during a two-day capacity building training aimed at empowering female aspirants for the positions of Member of Parliament and Ward Councilors from the Central Region at Sunbird Capital Hotel, Lilongwe.

    SPSO Launches Training for Handling Child Friendly Complaints

    Rosemary Agnew, the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman (SPSO), has launched an online training to help public service organisations handle complaints from or involving children and young people.     Ombudsman Ontario kicks off 50th anniversary year with Good Governance Awards

    On 28 February 2025, the Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé announced a new award for public sector bodies that have demonstrated exemplary administrative practices – the Ombudsman’s Award for Good Governance – as part of his office’s 50th anniversary activities. Awards will be given to selected organizations in three areas of the Ombudsman’s mandate – provincial government bodies, broader public sector bodies (e.g., school boards, universities, children’s aid societies), and municipalities, he announced.

    Veterans Ombud Releases Report on Additional Dependant Care Reimbursement

    On 26 February 2025, the Veterans Ombud Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine released a report on Additional Dependant Care, a reimbursement mechanism designed to provide relief for additional dependant care costs incurred by Veterans participating in the Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) Rehabilitation Program. The report found unfairness in the rules for reimbursement that could result in some Veterans not being afforded the same relief as others.
