Expanded jurisdiction over municipalities takes effect
Marianne Ryan, Alberta’s ninth Ombudsman, welcomes legislative changes that expand her office’s jurisdiction to include municipalities. The updated legislation takes effect April 1, 2018 and includes ‘municipalities’ to the jurisdiction, alongside Alberta government departments, designated professional organizations and the Patient Concerns Resolution Process of Alberta Health Services.

The Ombudsman of the Solomon Islands published the first edition of the Office’s 2017 bi-annual newsletter. It has been quite a while since the last edition of the newsletter was published and the Office decided to revive the publication as an important platform to educate citizens on the roles of the Ombudsman.

IOI President and Secretary General take part in ENO Conference 2018
Irish Ombudsman and IOI President Peter Tyndall and Austrian Ombudsman and IOI Secretary General Günther Kräuter took part in the annual European Network of Ombudsman Conference on 8-9 March 2018 in Brussels. The conference topics were the future of the EU, current and future challenges for Ombudsmen and cross-border problem solving for EU citizens.

Dunja Mijatović takes up office as Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights
Today, April 4th 2018, Dunja Mijatović takes up the post of Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights. National of Bosnia and Herzegovina, she has been elected last January by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. She is the first woman to hold this post, succeeding Nils Muižnieks (2012-2018), Thomas Hammarberg (2006-2012) and Alvaro Gil-Robles (1999-2006).

NHS failing patients with mental health problems
Vulnerable patients with mental health conditions are being badly let down by the NHS, causing them and their families needless suffering and distress, according to a Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman report published today. The Ombudsman has also found that NHS mental healthcare staff can lack the capacity, skills and training they need to do their job effectively, and do not always have the support they need to learn from mistakes.

New measures against energy poverty announced
Poverty is an enemy of human rights and states are successful to the extent on how much they look after the most vulnerable, said Ombudswoman Lora Vidović at the opening of the conference on energy poverty, that she organised on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and Social Exclusion. The participants welcomed the new measures announced by the representative of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Dean Smolar.

Niagara Region infringed journalist’s rights: Ombudsman makes recommendations
Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé called on the Regional Municipality of Niagara to apologize publicly to a local journalist and a citizen blogger for seizing their property and ejecting them from a council meeting last December. The region’s actions were unreasonable, unjust, wrong and contrary to law, Mr. Dubé’s investigation found.

Commission Participates in first conference for Ombudsmen of IGAD Member States
The Commission participated in the first Regional Conference for Ombudsmen of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states in Djibouti City, Djibouti, from 10th to 11thDecember, 2017. The Conference, whose theme was ‘Migration, Public Protection and Human Security’, was organised by IGAD for experience sharing and development of a regional approach to addressing the challenges related to migration, public protection and human security in the IGAD region.

Veterans Ombudsman tables Annual Report 2016-2017

Trailblazing Ombudsman has passed away
New Zealand’s first female Ombudsman, Nadja Tollemache OBE, has passed away at her home in Auckland. Ms Tollemache, who served as Ombudsman from 13 May 1987 to 30 June 1992, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones.

Aage Thor Falkanger re-elected as Ombudsman
Norwegian Parliamentary Ombudsman Aage Thor Falkanger was re-elected for another term of four years by the Parliament in November 2017. The Ombudsman is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament to safeguard the rights of individual citizens in their dealings with the public administration.

Asian Region elects new Director
The Asian Region of the IOI held an electronic ballot to fill the vacant position of one Asian Director on the IOI Board of Directors. Ms Un-Jong Pak, Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission in Korea, received the highest number of votes and was therefore declared elected as new Asian Director.

Ombudsman working to improve services for asylum seekers
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has published a commentary on his Office’s experience of dealing with complaints from refugees and asylum seekers living in direct provision centres. In ‘The Ombudsman & Direct Provision – The story so far’, the Ombudsman says that sometimes residents are reluctant to complain and some complaints arise as a result of cultural differences. As a result the Ombudsman’s office has worked with the Reception and Integration Agency, and residents and managers in 35 centres around the country to seek to improve services.
