Ombudsman probes Government’s handling of trees in front of University building in Hong Kong
The Ombudsman, Ms Connie Lau, on June 4 announced her Office’s initiation of a direct investigation to examine whether there was maladministration in the Government’s decisions and actions in respect of its felling of two trees in front of Tang Chi Ngong Building of the University of Hong Kong on May 20, 2018.

Ombudsman will host Training for Ombudsman institutions in February
The Office of the Ombudsman Malawi will host a Training on the Role of Ombudsman institutions in promoting and entrenching/enforcing ethics, transparency and accountability in the public sector in Lilongwe, Malawi at the Bingu International Conference Centre on 5 - 7 February 2018. The Training will be financially supported by the IOI regional subsidy programme 2017/2018.

Homeless family left in crowded conditions while council delayed making decision
A mother and her five children were accommodated in a damp and mouldy single bedroom, too small for the number of people, by Ealing council while it took too long to decide their homelessness status. A Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman investigation found the council’s delays added three months onto a six month stay in the unsuitable accommodation.

Attorney-General Senator the Hon George Brandis QC and the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon Julie Bishop MP today announced that the Australian Government has formally ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).

Ombudsman Sindh saves career of Ned University student
A student of NED University and some of his colleages approached Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik, Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, stating that although NED University of Engineering & Technology had announced a B.Tech Conversion Programme for students who had completed B.Tech (Pass) in a different field of engineering, entitling them for admission in 3rd year Bachelor of Engineering (B.E), admission was declined to them. The Ombudsman issued directives to the university to enquire and report and to the Vice Chancellor to streamline a procedure of admission in the university so that no student should suffer in the future.

8th AOM training session held in Casablanca
The eighth training session of the Association of the Mediterranean Ombudsmen, jointly organized by the AOM and the Ombudsman Institution in the Kingdom of Morocco, was successfully held on October 18 and 19, 2017 at the Training and Exchange in mediation Center in Casablanca. Dispensed to the collaborators of the Association’s member mediators, this session was an opportunity to discuss the theme of « the deontology of security forces and the rights of migrants during their migratory journey: the role of Ombudsmen institutions ».

Ombudsman welcomes Minister’s announcement of €245,000 compensation for Donegal family
Irish Ombudsman Peter Tyndall today welcomed Minister Michael Creed’s announcement that he will implement an Ombudsman recommendation that a Donegal family receive compensation of €245,570. The announcement follows an initial refusal in 2009 by the then Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to implement the recommendation.

Ombudsman Nilda Arduin and Council of Advice member retired banker Jan Beaujon were appointed “informateurs” on Thursday by Governor Eugene Holiday. Arduin and Beaujon will research the possibilities for the formation of a new government for the country that is supported by the broadest possible majority in Parliament.

Acting New South Wales Ombudsman releases Child Death Review Team Annual Report 2016-17
The Acting Ombudsman and Convenor of the NSW Child Death Review Team (CDRT), Professor John McMillan AO, tabled the CDRT’s annual report for 2016-17. The work that the CDRT does is focused on one key outcome – to prevent the deaths of children. The report details the degree to which the CDRT’s recommendations to prevent or reduce the likelihood of child deaths have been accepted by government, and the progress being made by agencies to implement them.
