The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) looks at how the pandemic affected the rights of older people. It highlights the need for a rights-based approach as governments shape their exit strategies.

20e Anniversaire de la directive européenne sur l’égalité de traitement
Ce lundi 29 juin le Défenseur des droits, Jacques Toubon est intervenu à l’occasion d’un webinaire intitulé « Equality 2020, 20 years of Equality bodies » co-organisé par « Equinet », le réseau européen des organismes de promotion de l’égalité. Réunissant 46 membres issus de 34 pays d’Europe, majoritairement des bureaux d’Ombudsman ou des commissions pour les droits humains, Equinet entend promouvoir l’égalité en Europe, et ce en soutenant les actions et travaux des organismes nationaux de promotion de l’égalité.

Día Internacional en Apoyo de las Víctimas de la Tortura, 26 de junio
En el día de apoyo a las víctimas de la tortura, desde el Mecanismo Nacional para la Prevención de la Tortura, instamos al Estado a garantizar el respeto de las salvaguardas de la población bajo la custodia del Estado, y a implementar acciones que permitan un trato digno a estas personas, ya que las condiciones en que se encuentran actualmente podrían constituir tortura o malos tratos.

Se realizará de manera virtual, por primera vez, con el fin de respetar el aislamiento social, preventivo y obligatorio.

CPT’s 2019 annual report: 30 years preventing torture and ill-treatment
The 30th anniversary of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) in 2019 was an opportunity to take stock of the committee’s achievements. Since 1989, the CPT has carried out more than 450 visits to Council of Europe member states, conducting its fact-finding work in police stations, prisons, immigration detention centres, psychiatric establishments, social care homes and other locations where persons may be deprived of their liberty.

Ombudsman urges improvements in how trees are protected in Northern Ireland’s planning system
A report published by the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) into how trees are protected has found that despite 369 tree protection breaches reported between 2019 and 2022, only one resulted in enforcement action being taken, and none led to prosecution. The report also found there was a lack of clear information for the public on Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), and that information about which trees are protected should be made more accessible.

2019 Annual Report of Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights
In 2019, the reform of local self-government and territorial organization of government continued in Ukraine. The process of forming the amalgamated territorial communities brought about the issue of the ability of local self-government bodies to ensure the observance, realization and protection of rights of citizens to social protection, healthcare, work, education and culture. Therefore, one of the strategic directions of the Commissioner’s activity was to exercise parliamentary oversight over the observance of social rights of citizens in the context of decentralization.
