2018-02-05NIPSO investigates complaint against Department for Infrastructure
The Public Services Ombudsman investigated a complaint by Belfast City Airport Watch Limited (BCAWL) regarding the actions of the Department of Environment in relation to George Best Belfast City Airport in failing to enforce the 2008 Planning Agreement between it and the Airport as well as concerning the handling of BCAWL’s complaint by the Department. The Ombudsman identified five instances of maladministration by the Department and made recommendations on the matter.

2016-11-02Improving public services with systemic and own motion investigations
People are often relcuctant to come forward to the Ombudsman because they fear negative consequences. Therefore, it is important that an Ombudsman is able to undertake investigations on his or her own initiative. On occasions, the Ombudsman will be made or become aware of possible maladministration where no complaint has been made. Such investigations often consider systemic issues and ensure that the Ombudsman can be effective in tackling poor administration and improving public services.

2017-02-17New acting Commonwealth Ombudsman
Mr Richard Glenn has been appointed as the Acting Commonwealth Ombudsman. Mr Glenn followed Colin Neave, who ended his term in December 2016 and who had served on the IOI Board of Directors as President of the IOI’s Australasian and Pacific Region from 2015 to 2016.

Ombudsman Peter Tyndall wants to see more people complain about services provided by public bodies such as government departments, local authorities and the HSE. Launching his annual report for 2015 the Ombudsman said that complaints can be used to improve the delivery of public services.
