    SPSO Draft Strategic Plan 2018-2020 Consultation

    In the coming weeks the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body will be considering the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman’s (SPSO) draft revised Strategic Plan. The revised Plan covers the SPSO’s vision and strategic aims for 2018-2020. It is available at the bottom of this page, along with the covering letter to the SPCB. The SPSO invites comments, from individuals and organisation, about all aspects of the draft Plan. The consultation is open until 28 February 2018.

    NIPSO investigates complaint against Department for Infrastructure

    The Public Services Ombudsman investigated a complaint by Belfast City Airport Watch Limited (BCAWL) regarding the actions of the Department of Environment in relation to George Best Belfast City Airport in failing to enforce the 2008 Planning Agreement between it and the Airport as well as concerning the handling of BCAWL’s complaint by the Department. The Ombudsman identified five instances of maladministration by the Department and made recommendations on the matter.

    Ombudsman community mourns passing of Guido Schuermans

    The international Ombudsman community mourns the death of Guido Schuermans, Honorary-Federal Ombudsman of Belgium, who quietly passed away on 23 August 2018. Mr Schuermans was an outstanding Ombudsman and will be greatly missed.

    Ombudsman invites applications for position of Deputy Ombudsman

    The Ombudsman of the Cayman Islands invites applications for a temporary appointment to the position of Deputy Ombudsman (Complaints). The purpose of this temporary post (to March 11, 2020), is to provide leadership in establishing a complaints process for members of the public relating to police misconduct and to establish all of the policies, guidance and educational materials required to support the goals of the Whistleblower Protection Law.

    FOI 20 Conference: 20 Years of Freedom of Information legislation in Ireland

    IOI President and Irish Information Commissioner Peter Tyndall hosted a conference to mark 20 years of the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) in Ireland on Friday 13 April in Dublin.  The half-day conference reflected on the impact of FOI in Ireland and its contribution to the reform of the public service.

    Office of Human Rights Defender establishes new business and human rights unit

    The Office of the Defender of Human Rights of Armenia has established a new Business and Human Rights Unit, which will deal with the protection of rights in the field of business. The aim of this new unit is to contribute to the implementation of business-related human rights across the country through research, monitoring and other activities.

    Ombudsman opens new family room at Mater hospital

    Ombudsman Peter Tyndall Monday opened a new family and patient room at the Mater Hospital, Dublin. The family room is part of the Mater’s “end of life” care service and will give families who are losing a loved one a quiet, comfortable and private space where they can also stay the night.

    Commonwealth Ombudsman released NDIA report

    Commonwealth Ombudsman Michael Manthorpe released a report on the 15 May 2018 into the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) handling of reviews of decisions under the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013. The report discusses systemic issues highlighted by complaints and stakeholder feedback including significant backlogs, delays in decision making and poor communication practices.

    Ombudsman increasingly dealing with social security problems

    The total number of complaints delivered in 2017 to the Ombudsman was 8,191. People increasingly turn to the Ombudsman's Office with their problems in the sphere of social security and also number of complaints concerning work and employment increased by 39 percent.

    Victorian Ombudsman tabled report into Wodonga City Council’s overcharged waste management levy

    Wodonga Council collected at least $18 million in extra revenue from its waste management levy over the past decade, using the surplus to fund other council services, the Ombudsman has found. Tabling her Investigation into Wodonga City Council’s overcharging of a waste management levy in the Victorian Parliament today, Ombudsman Deborah Glass said about 70 per cent of the revenue raised through the charge had been spent on waste-related services. Nearly a third had been spent on other council services, such as the maintenance of parks, gardens and other council activities.

    Trailblazing Ombudsman has passed away

    New Zealand’s first female Ombudsman, Nadja Tollemache OBE, has passed away at her home in Auckland. Ms Tollemache, who served as Ombudsman from 13 May 1987 to 30 June 1992, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones.

    IOI Board Meeting held in Toronto, Ontario

    The annual IOI Board Meeting was held from 1 – 4 May 2018 in Toronto, Canada, paying tribute to the country in which the IOI was established 40 years ago. Paul Dubé, IOI Regional President for North America and Ombudsman of Ontario, and his office generously hosted the event.

    Regional training on role of Ombudsman institutions in promoting and enforcing accountability ethics

    The Office of the Ombudsman (Malawi) is hosting the African regional training on "The role of Ombudsman Institutions in promoting and enforcing accountability ethics" as well as the 14th AOMA Executive Committee meeting from 5 - 9 February 2018 . The training will be held in the framework of the IOI's annual regional subsidy program and attended by IOI President Peter Tyndall.

    Ombudsman Hong Kong announces results of two direct investigations

    On 19 February 2019, Hong Kong Ombudsman Connie Lau announced the completion of two direct investigations, namely “Government’s support for non-Chinese speaking students” and “Government’s handling of two trees in front of Tang Chi Ngong Building of University of Hong Kong”.
