Allegations “not substantiated” in matter referred to Victorian Ombudsman by parliamentary committee
In November 2016 the case of the transfer of young people to a hastily configured youth justice and remand centre inside a maximum-security adult prison, became subject to Supreme Court proceedings. Later, the case was referred to the ombudsman by the Victorian Parliament’s Legal and Social Issues Committee. Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass has recommended no further action be taken after investigating the allegations.

IGT report on review into GST Refunds publicly released
The Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT) welcomes the release of his report into the Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) verification of Goods and Services Tax (GST) Refunds. The review arose from concerns raised through the taxpayer complaints and IGT work program about the ATO’s GST Refunds risk assessment tools and adequacy of the ATO’s engagement with taxpayers and their representatives where release of refunds is delayed.

Tender for IOI regional subsidies 2018/2019
The members of the IOI Board of Directors decided at their Board meeting in Toronto to continue the regional subsidy programme for the membership year 2018/2019. The overall sum of subsidies to be released in 2018/2019 amounts to 42,000 Euro. The amount will be split equally between the regions (7,000 Euro per region) and will take into account that no subsidy granted should be less than 2,000 Euro. Submit your application until 05 October 2018!

According to the Organic Law of the Commission Against Corruption of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Commissioner Against Corruption, Cheong Weng Chon, submitted 2017 Annual Report of the Commission Against Corruption of Macao to the Chief Executive, Chui Sai On, in March 2018. The report was published in the Official Gazette of the Macao Special Administrative Region today (11th April).

Ombudsman’s Office to take role in monitoring private aged care facilities / court cells
The Office of the Ombudsman will soon be monitoring the treatment of patients in privately run aged care facilities and detainees in court cells. The additional responsibilities were gazetted today. They are in addition to the Office’s current responsibilities under the United Nation’s Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT).

Belize Ombudsman Delivers Speech at Control Yuan
Ombudsman of Belize, Lionel Arzu, visited the Control Yuan (CY) on 30 October 2018. During his visit, he delivered a speech in which he introduced the Belizean Office of the Ombudsman’s promotion of good governance and protection of human rights. He also engaged in open and friendly discussions with CY members and staff.

Victorian Parliament referred new investigation to Ombudsman
Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass has received a letter from the Legislative Assembly of the Victorian Parliament referring a matter for investigation and report under section 16 of the Ombudsman Act 1973. The referral requires THE Ombudsman to investigate matters concerning invoices current and former Liberal and Nationals MPs certified for payment by the Department of Parliamentary Services.
