Avoidable eye removal surgery after failure to treat infection
A man lost his eye due to NHS failures in treating an eye infection, causing him significant distress and leaving him unable to work or drive. An investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) has found that the failure to diagnose and treat the complainant’s eye infection correctly, meant that it became untreatable and, as a result, he had to have one eye surgically removed.

NIPSO Quarterly Bulletin – October 2018
The Office of the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) published the October edition of its quarterly bulletin. The bulletin contains news of the upcoming conference on own initiative investigations to be held in Belfast next week, a link to NIPSO’s new animated video for members of the public and a selection of the Office’s latest investigation reports.

Our value for money: an independent review
Earlier this year the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) commissioned an independent panel to carry out a peer review assessment of its value for money, led by Peter Tyndall, Ombudsman for the Republic of Ireland and President of the International Ombudsman Institute. The panel has now published their report, which concluded that following the PHSO’s organisational reforms and the service it offers beyond investigating complaints, the Office offers good value for money for taxpayers.

New Study addresses access to sport for people with disabilities
The Commission has published a study that seeks to promote best practice for providing enhanced opportunities for individuals with disabilities to be involved in organised sports.There are an estimated 80m people with a disability in the European Union (EU), equivalent to approximately 15% of the EU population. Disabled people are less likely to take part in organised sport than non-disabled individuals, this despite the many positive benefits of participation.
