Ombudsman publishes summaries of selected cases and 2018 Year in Review in Cayman Islands
The Office of the Ombudsman has added a new section to their website. Summaries of selected cases can be found under the “Outcomes” tab at Ombudsman.ky. These summaries provide insight into specific cases dealt with by the Ombudsman and include details about the resolution of those cases.

Ombudsman and Ministry of Health and Population train South East Zone Hospital Ombudsman
In its continued efforts in improving health service delivery the Office of the Ombudsman (OoO) in collaboration with the Quality Management Department of the Ministry of Health and Population is conducting a training for Hospital Ombudsman from the South East zone health facilities. The training was held at Palm Valley Lodge in Thyolo from the 17th to 18th of April, 2019.

BC Ombudsperson able to investigate whistleblower allegations under new law
Since 1 December 2019 British Colombia, Canada, has a new law that gives current and former provincial government employees a way to bring forward concerns about wrongdoing in workplace. The Public Interest Disclosure Act gives the Ombudsperson a new statutory mandate to conduct whistleblowing investigations if employees do not wish to report those concerns internally to their employer.

The Basque Ombudsman, Manuel Lezertua, the Greek Ombudsman, Andreas Pottakis and the Dutch Ombudsman, Reinier van Zutphen, spoke with two commissioners of the European Commission on Tuesday 19 March. The topic was the integration of asylum seekers and refugees and relocation.

A peer review is a good tool to improve an office’s service and to learn from best practices of other offices. Comparing structures, legal basis, methods and effectiveness with others can create a driver for strategic improvement and provide validation. Based on the practical experience from peer reviews a new IOI Best Practice Paper was developed and is now available online.

Roundtable discussion sparks talks for action and change
The Ombudsman in conjunction with the Commonwealth Secretariat recently held roundtable discussions on equality and inclusion understood in the context of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRH) in Namibia. The discussions also included the context of sexual orientation and gender identity in Namibia. The week-long discussions saw stakeholders from the Education, civil society; NGOs, government and other sectors share their experiences and challenges pertaining to the two issues at hand.

Constitutional Court recognized automatic deprivation of means of communication in disciplinary cells unconstitutional
The Constitutional Court recognized unconstitutional the legal regulations stating the automatic (by default) deprivation of the contact with outside world of detainees and convicted persons transferred to the disciplinary cell, based on the application submitted by the Human Rights Defender. The Court stated June 5, 2019 as a deadline for the National Assembly and the Government, giving a possibility to correspond the challenged provisions to the requirements of the decision, otherwise they will be declared repealed.

Which Ombudsman deals with which complaint?
A new guide to finding the correct Ombudsman has been launched by Irish Parliament Speaker, Seán Ó Fearghaíl and Rónán Ó Domhnaill, Chair of the Irish Ombudsman Network. The guide features the seven main Irish ‘Ombudsman’ offices and lists other complaint handlers.
