2019-01-29Ombudsman received over 5,500 complaints in 2018
In 2018, the Parliamentary Ombudsman of Finland received 5,591 complaints. The number is very high, although it falls slightly from the all-time record of 6,192 in 2017. The administrative branches with the highest number of complaints in 2018 were social services (1,097), the police (632) and healthcare (612).

2019-02-18Constitutional Court recognized automatic deprivation of means of communication in disciplinary cells unconstitutional
The Constitutional Court recognized unconstitutional the legal regulations stating the automatic (by default) deprivation of the contact with outside world of detainees and convicted persons transferred to the disciplinary cell, based on the application submitted by the Human Rights Defender. The Court stated June 5, 2019 as a deadline for the National Assembly and the Government, giving a possibility to correspond the challenged provisions to the requirements of the decision, otherwise they will be declared repealed.

2019-01-10IOI President appears before UK Parliamentary Committee
On Tuesday 8 January IOI President and Irish Ombudsman Peter Tyndall appeared before the UK Parliament’s Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee. Mr Tyndall was giving his observations on the performance of the UK Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. This followed a peer review of the PHSO which Mr Tyndall chaired with Caroline Mitchell (Lead Ombudsman Financial Ombudsman Service) and Chris Gill (lecturer, University of Glasgow).
