IGTO says it’s vital to ensure bank account integrity to prevent and detect Tax Identity (TaxID) fraud
The Inspector-General of Taxation and Taxation Ombudsman (IGTO) commenced an own-motion investigation into Tax identification (TaxID) fraud on 15 December 2023. This was in response to an increase in complaints and dispute investigations concerning TaxID fraud received by the IGTO.

The Institution of the Banking Mohtasib Pakistan (BMP) has provided relief amounting to Rs 1.26 billion to the Banking Customers by disposing of 25,493 complaints against commercial banks during the calendar year 2023.

Office of the Ombudsman publishes Guide on human rights approach to complaint handling
The Office of the Ombudsman in Ireland has recently introduced a Human Rights-based approach to Ombudsman complaint handling. The Office has also developed a guide: ‘Human Rights: A guide for Ombudsman staff when investigating complaints’. The project was financed by the IOI as part of its Regional subsidy programme.

BC Ombudsperson sees youth in custody at risk due to ministry inaction
The BC Ombudsperson has identified a serious lack of progress by the Ministry of Children and Family Development on a 2021 Ombudsperson report with troubling findings about separate confinement of youth in custody centres. “The ministry’s inaction continues to expose vulnerable youth in its care to the risk of significant harm from separate confinement, especially Indigenous youth,” said Ombudsperson Jay Chalke.

New statute: Ombudsman welcomes legal strengthening of her Office
European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly welcomes the Parliament’s approval (602 votes out of the 692 cast) of a strengthened legal framework for her Office. The revised statute strengthens the legal base of the Ombudsman and introduces new safeguards to further guarantee its independence, including an adequate budget to support the Office’s activities.

This year the National Ombudsman has also published his annual report as a Magazine. The National Ombudsman has opted for the digital annual magazine in order to clarify the work of the National Ombudsman institute to professionals (e.g. complaint handlers, intermediaries, academics, etc.).

Discussion paper on Integration published by the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands
During the IOI world conference, the Ombudsman of Greece, the Ararteko of the Basque Country and the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands presented their papers on asylum and migration topics. Ombudsman Svetina meets with representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
On 28 May 2021, Ombudsman Peter Svetina received Mr Roland Schilling, Head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Central Europe (UNHCR), and Ms Romana Zidar, Senior Protection Associate for Slovenia. They discussed current asylum and refugee issues and the challenges facing European countries in the area of migration.
