    Ombudsman Fardelli meets South African Public Protector Gcaleka

    On Thursday, 14 December 2023, an online meeting of extraordinary significance took place between Dr. Marino Fardelli, President of the National Coordination of Italian Ombudsmen and Ombudsman of the Lazio Region, and Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka, Public Protector of South Africa. Both were recently elected to their respective boards for Europe and Africa within the International Ombudsman Institute.

    Can a further pandemic be handled less restrictively in Prison and Probation Service institutions?

    Only one out of all inmates in state and local prisons and halfway houses under the Danish Prison and Probation Service has been infected with COVID-19. The Ombudsman finds this very positive. At the same time, however, he recommends, following a recent Ombudsman investigation, that the Prison and Probation Service review its experiences of recent months with a view to determining whether a future pandemic can be handled by means of less restrictive measures.

    On 6 December 2023, the Victorian Ombudsman tabled in Parliament her report Alleged politicisation of the public sector: Investigation of a matter referred from the Legislative Council on 9 February 2022 – Part 2. It stemmed from a motion requiring the Ombudsman to investigate several matters, including an allegation about the politicisation of the public sector.

    BC independent oversight offices urge public consultation, legislative reform on use of artificial intelligence

    Three oversight Officers of the Legislature are urging the BC government to expand its consultation on draft principles for the responsible use of artificial intelligence to members of the public in a letter to Minister of Citizens’ Services Lisa Beare. The ministry’s consultation is currently restricted to employees of the BC public service. The officers are also calling on government to ensure clear legislation is in place to protect the interest of British Columbians when AI is used.

    Provincial Ombudsman Khyber Pakhtunkhwa successfully conducted second awareness campaign

    After successfully conducting the first phase of awareness campaign under the IOI regional subsidy project, the IOI General Secretariat has extended the said project further under the IOI regional subsidy project and granted a subsidy grant worth 2,667/-€. A detailed plan of different activities was prepared for the proper utilization of this grant/amount.

    Malawi Parliament passes Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill

    On 7 December 2023, the Malawi Parliament passed the Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill 2023 after close to one and half hours of scrutiny. This bill seeks to amend the Ombudsman Act (Cap. 3:07) in order to clarify and strengthen the legal framework of the jurisdiction and mandate of the Ombudsman.

    AOMA held its 7th General Assembly

    The African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) successfully concluded its 7th General Assembly in Kigali, Rwanda, from 27-29 November 2023. Themed "Navigating Ethical Dilemmas in Mediation and Ombudsman Roles," this assembly was a pivotal forum for leaders and delegates from across Africa to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the evolving ethical considerations in mediation and Ombudsman services.

    Ombudsman’s Annual Report 2019 tabled

    The Annual Report 2019 presents the Ombudsman’s yearly update to the public on the work of her Office. In 2019 the Ombudsman’s Office handled 299 cases, including 214 new complaints, 49 new enquiries and 36 outstanding complaints that remained open as of 1st January 2019.
