Baltic-Nordic Ombudsman conference in Vilnius draws attention to importance of economic and social rights
On 26 September 2019, a Baltic-Nordic ombudsman conference "Ensuring social and economic rights is a safeguard of a dignified life" took place at the National Library of Lithuania. At the opening of the conference, the Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office of Lithuania greeted the ombudsmen from the Baltic and Nordic countries, the Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights of Lithuanian Parliament and welcomed the fact that conference discussions on protection and improvement of human rights and freedoms can be held in the Baltic-Nordic framework.

Court of Appeal declares Ombudsman decisions binding
A three judge bench of the Court of Appeal of Kenya has ruled that the determinations and recommendations of the Commission on Administrative Justice, also known as Office of the Ombudsman, have the force of law hence are binding on public institutions. The landmark decision was made on 26th September 2019.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ombudsman has taken several decisions on cases against maladministration, majority (about 80%) of which are in favour of complainants. This position illustrates the importance of such grievance redressal system as pillars of good governance, providing foundations for accountability and delivery of public services.

Control Yuan investigates case regarding remote area students traveling afar for education
Though the 12-year Basic Education system came into effect in August 2014, students living in remote areas with no junior or senior high schools nearby have to travel afar for education. The costs of transportation and accommodation can become a heavy burden for parents, which is why Control Yuan launched an investigation to ensure the right to education.

The Ombudsman Commission welcomes the appointment of Ombudsman Richard Pagen as the Acting Chief Ombudsman. He fills the position left vacant by former Chief Ombudsman Michael Dick whose service came to end when he reached the retirement age of 55 on 4th October 2019.

Ombudsman Svetina meets with Austrian Ombudsman Amon
On 13 January 2020, Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina hosted a working visit from Werner Amon, Secretary General of the IOI and Chair of the Austrian Ombudsman Board. Amon and his Slovenian counterpart exchanged the experiences of their respective national institutions dedicated to human rights and called for even greater cooperation between ombudsmen in Europe.

NPM recommends maximum term for stay of foreigners alone in detention facilities in airports
The Ombudsman of Portugal, acting as head of the National Mechanism for the Prevention (MNP) of Torture and Mistreatment, addressed a recommendation to the Portuguese Immigrants and Borders Service (SEF) to avoid situations of excessive isolation of persons detained in temporary installation facilities in airports, while awaiting the decision to enter the country.

Control Yuan launches public online system of political donation records
Following amendment of the Political Donation Act in 2018, the Control Yuan has established an online system of political donation records. The general public can use the system to check the income and expenditures of political parties, groups and candidates without having to go to the CY to make an inquiry in person. The system will help facilitate public accountability and transparency with respect to political donations, which is in line with the goals of the Sunshine Acts.
