Inauguration of sixth Control Yuan and establishment of National Human Rights Commission
The President and Members of the sixth Control Yuan (CY) were inaugurated on 1 August 2020, with Vice President Lai Ching-te presiding. The same day, the grand opening of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was presided over by President Tsai Ing-wen, along with NHRC Chair Chen Chu, former CY President Chang Po-ya, and Member Upay Radiw Kanasaw. The establishment of the NHRC marks a milestone in Taiwan’s human rights development.

Committee on Human Rights discusses issue of monitoring rights of convicts during a quarantine
At the meeting of the Seimas Committee on Human Rights, the issue of ensuring human rights in the institutions subordinated to the Prison Department during an emergency situation was discussed. During the meeting, Augustinas Normantas, the Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office, drew the attention of the participants to the fact that quarantine conditions are currently being mitigated; therefore, it is necessary to talk about quarantine mitigation measures in correctional facilities.
