A group of independent UN experts today recalled that "the prohibition of arbitrary detention is absolute even during times of public emergencies" and urged governments worldwide to prevent arbitrary deprivation of liberty in the context of the measures currently adopted for controlling the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Control Yuan publishes 2019 Annual Report
Recently, the Control Yuan published the 2019 Annual Report. The report includes 6 case summaries, which are categorized into public expenditures, upholding discipline and safeguarding human rights. In 2019, the Control Yuan received 14,425 people’s complaints and issued 262 investigation reports. Also 18 impeachment and 116 corrective measure cases were proposed.

The Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia has created a special page on its website, exclusively dedicated to the COVID-19 pandemic. On 5 March 2020, Ms Marjeta Cotman and Dr Jože Ruparčič were elected by the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia to the position of Deputy Ombudsmen of the Republic of Slovenia.

Irish Ombudsman receives highest number of complaints in 10 years
Complaints to the Ombudsman rose by 9% to 3,664 in 2019. It is the highest number of complaints received by the Ombudsman since 2010. Ombudsman Peter Tyndall examines complaints about public services, such as those provided by government departments, local authorities and the HSE.

Police Ombudsman evaluates impact of Body Worn Video
In a special report the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, Marie Anderson, evaluates the impact of the introduction of Body Worn Video (BWV) on complaints about the Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI).
