Board of Directors adopts resolution on Covid-19
The outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the subsequent rapid development of the pandemic have had a huge impact on all of us, but it has had a disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable in our societies. The Ombudsman’s role is crucial in making sure people have access to the public services they need and that these services are delivered fairly. In a resolution adopted by the IOI Board of Directors on 18 May 2020, the IOI speaks out on this issue and calls on all Ombudsman institutions to redouble their efforts.

Public Defender positively evaluates situation at checkpoints
Representatives of the Public Defender’s office visited the checkpoints set up for quarantine purposes in Marneuli, Rustavi and Mtskheta, where servicemen of the Defense Forces are deployed together with representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to evaluate the working conditions, health care procedures and monitored the procedures carried out by the military towards citizens at the checkpoints.

Board of Directors holds first electronic meeting due to Covid-19
On 18 May 2020 the IOI Board of Directors held its annual meeting to identify and discuss projects and priorities for the upcoming membership year. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the Board held its annual meeting by electronic means for the first time and despite the challenge of a wide range of different time zones, 15 out of currently 20 Directors joined the videoconference hosted by the Office of IOI President and Ireland Ombudsman Peter Tyndall.

The conduct of the police with regard to fining persons for not wearing a mask or failure to wear it properly and their apprehension to police departments become concerning and, from a systemic point of view, result in incorrect developments.

Tender for IOI regional subsidies 2020/2021
In its efforts to further increase its regional impact, the IOI will continue the regional subsidy programme for the membership year 2020/2021. IOI members wishing to apply for a regional subsidy are asked to fill in the IOI subsidy application form and submit their project proposal to the General Secretariat by 14 August 2020.

CPT’s 2019 annual report: 30 years preventing torture and ill-treatment
The 30th anniversary of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) in 2019 was an opportunity to take stock of the committee’s achievements. Since 1989, the CPT has carried out more than 450 visits to Council of Europe member states, conducting its fact-finding work in police stations, prisons, immigration detention centres, psychiatric establishments, social care homes and other locations where persons may be deprived of their liberty.

London man has to give up job after council houses him in Birmingham
A man had to give up one of his jobs because he was given accommodation in Birmingham – leaving him with a three hour commute. An investigation by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has found London Borough of Merton at fault because it did not take into account the man’s employment status when making the offer of accommodation so far away.

The Western Cape Police Ombudsman presents its Annual Performance Report for the 2019-2020 financial year. It seeks to enhance the efficiency of police services and improve relations between the police and communities by investigating complaints of police inefficiency and/or by investigating any breakdown of relations between the police and communities in the Western Cape.

Report 2019 - more than 51,000 requests and 9,800 new instructed processes
In 2019, the Ombudsman received 51,313 requests through the various channels available to citizens (6.6% more than in 2018), and 9823 complaint procedures were opened, representing an increase of 5% in relation to 2018. Compared with 2017, the growth in new complaint procedures is 26%; taking 2016 as a reference, the increase is 42%.
