On 27 May 2021 the Kyiv International Forum on Roma Inclusion was held at the initiative of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova. Based on the results of the Kyiv International Forum, it was decided to publish an Almanac, which will be published quarterly. The first issue dedicated to the Forum is now available.

Recordatorio - Invitación a participar en una encuesta para el proyecto OPRAS
El Defensor del Pueblo de los Servicios Públicos de Irlanda del Norte y el profesor Chris Gill (Universidad de Glasgow) están llevando a cabo un proyecto de investigación conjunto que examina el papel de los defensores del pueblo en la protección de los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo (el proyecto OPRAS). La encuesta correspondiente, cuyo objetivo es conocer el trabajo de los defensores del pueblo en este ámbito e identificar buenas prácticas, sigue abierta hasta el 27 de septiembre de 2024. Ahora también puede descargarse la encuesta en formato Word para facilitar su cumplimentación cuando sea más de una persona la que la rellene.

Ombudsman urges government action on health issues amid concerns
Virgílio da Silva Guterres ‘Lamukan’, Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, has urgently called upon the Minister of Health and her team to address pressing issues affecting hospitals in Timor-Leste. Speaking at Hotel Timor on July 10th, Guterres emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “We cannot afford to let the situation in hospitals deteriorate further.”

It is an informative and practical tool with the most important information for whistleblowers who want to make a report to the Federal Ombudsman. The brochure sets out the procedures for making a report and for obtaining protection from the Belgian institution.

International online conference and questionnaire on the role of the ombudsman in advancing the rights of the elderly
On Wednesday 1 December 2021, the Office of the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel, under the auspices of the IOI and AOM, will be hosting an international online conference on the theme "Advancing the Rights of the Elderly in an Age of Longevity". The Office of the Ombudsman has released the 2023 Annual Report which presents the activities that the Office carried out in the year. Pursuant to the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi and the Ombudsman Act, the Ombudsman has submitted the report to the National Assembly through the Office of the speaker.

Annual Report 2023 – a credible and trusted institution closer to the people
On 8 July 2024, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon, presented the Annual Report 2023 to the Speaker of the House, Anglu Farrugia. Throughout 2023, the Office of the Ombudsman focused on enhancing its working relationship with the public administration. It adopted an open-door policy, reaching out to the public and government entities alike.

European Regional President Reinier van Zutphen discusses migration and asylum issues in Warsaw
The National Ombudsman of the Netherlands and European Regional President, Reinier van Zutphen, visited Warsaw last week. The aim of the visit was to talk to Frontex. Over the past years there have been many disturbing signals about pushbacks of migrants at the EU borders which sometimes resulted in people dying. Several National Ombudsman have addressed this in their own countries.

Dr. Marcin Wiącek, who was elected as the new Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Poland on 23 July 2021, took office. He succeeds Mr Adam Bodnar, who completed his term of office earlier this year.

Dudley council to refund care home fees following Ombudsman investigation
Dudley council has agreed to refund care home top-up fees for concerned families whose relatives were not offered an affordable placement, because of a Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman investigation. The agreement has come following a complaint from a man about care home top-up fees he paid for his mother’s care.

Control Yuan presents 90th Anniversary Special Issue
On 29 July 2021, the Control Yuan officially released “The Control Yuan 90th Anniversary Special Issue.” 2021 marks the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Control Yuan (CY). At the end of 2020, President Chu CHEN instructed CY Secretary General Judy, Fu-meei JU to start compiling an anniversary special issue in the hopes of showcasing the positive work that the CY does in helping the workings of government.

Examen par les Nations Unies de la mise en œuvre de la CIDPH
Du 18 au 23 août 2021, le Comité des droits des personnes handicapées des Nations-Unies examinera le rapport initial de la France sur la mise en œuvre de la Convention relative aux droits des personnes handicapées (CIDPH). Le Défenseur des droits, a remis dans un rapport parallèle faisant état d’un bilan contrasté de la mise en œuvre de la CIDPH en matière d’effectivité des droits des personnes handicapées.

Victorian Ombudsman investigates EPA’s approval of spoil location sites for West Gate Tunnel Project
The Victorian Ombudsman has launched an investigation into the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) decisions to approve sites to receive spoil from the West Gate Tunnel Project. The investigation follows community concern about where tonnes of spoil from the West Gate Tunnel Project will be located and complaints made to the Ombudsman’s office about the project.
