The Commission on Administrative Justice (Office of the Ombudsman) has recently published its 15th issue of the Ombudsman Newsletter (October - December 2024). This newsletter's main topics are, amongst others, an introduction to the third cohort of commissioners that took office on 9 December 2024, the Commission being named as the Best Public Sector Legal Department of 2024 at the 7th Annual Gala and Award Ceremony of the Nairobi Legal Awards as well as a training for Civil Society Organizations including the dissemination of a Public Inquiry Report on the challenges citizens face when obtaining legal identity documents.

In December 2025, the Office of the Ombudsman of Israel hosted a roundtable conference, under the auspices of Matanyahu Englman, State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel, focused on the methodologies used in handling public complaints. Attendees included ombudspersons and public complaint managers from government ministries, statutory authorities, and state-owned companies.

The IOI was pleased to continue the successful training series for Ombudsman with a mandate as National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) with a workshop in Oslo, which was generously hosted by the Office of the Norwegian Parliamentary Ombud and successfully delivered by the IOI’s long-standing and experienced partner, the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT).

2017-12-04Investigation into the management of maintenance claims against public housing tenant
As a result of a number of complaints to the Ombudsman and wider community concern, the Ombudsman conducted an investigation into the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Housing's processes for determining and pursuing maintenance debts against public housing tenants. The investigation found that many public housing tenants were charged thousands of dollars for the repair of damaged public housing, even when there was no evidence they caused the damage. The investigation also found that the department was wasting public resources and breaching its responsibility as a Model Litigant by making unreasonable demands for cost recovery and pursing claims to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

On 27.11.2024, the Office of the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel hosted a highly successful roundtable event to mark the publication of its special report on the topic of public service in public bodies. The report was tabled with the Israeli parliament (Knesset) on 26.11.2024.
