Erica Smith-Penn appointed Complaints Commissioner
Mrs. Erica R. Smith-Penn has been appointed Complaints Commissioner effective January 1, 2021. His Excellency the Governor Augustus Jaspert appointed Mrs. Smith-Penn to the post after consultation with the Premier and the Leader of the Opposition in accordance with section 110(2) of the Virgin Islands Constitution.

Ombudsman says implementation of Government’s plan on Direct Provision is key
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has welcomed the Government’s White Paper on ‘Ending Direct Provision’, which includes a commitment to phasing out the system over the next four years. Ombudsman suggests solutions for teleworking parents with dependents or minor children
The Ombudsman sent a letter to the Secretary of State for Education and the Secretary of State for Social Security, in which she requested consideration of solutions for employees in the telework regime who are faced with situations that are incompatible with the demands of their family lives, in particular when they have dependent children or children under 12 years of age studying at home.

Control Yuan receives inmate videoconferencing petition
The Control Yuan (CY) has made the provision of diverse services a policy goal and been dedicated to the implementation of receiving complaints via videoconferencing. On 27 January 2021, the CY received its first inmate videoconference petition. This practice enables inmates deprived of physical and communication freedom to file complaints to CY members via videoconference.

Deputy-Ombudsman Sakslin gave decisions on child protection
Maija Sakslin, Deputy-Ombudsman has proposed compensation for a child who was sexually exploited by a child welfare institution employee. The foster care unit and the municipality had acted appropriately to investigate the offence and to make the perpetrator liable after the incident.

Ombudsman Hong Kong announces launch of two direct investigations
On 14 January 2021, the Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced the launch of two direct investigations: one to examine the effectiveness of rodent prevention and control by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) and another to examine the Government’s regulation of boarding facilities for foreign domestic helpers (FDHs).

USOA hosts virtual training on poverty, race and consciousness
The United States Ombudsman Association (USOA) hosted a four-hour virtual training on 22 October 2020, entitled “Poverty, Race, and Consciousness”. The presenters were Dr. Shariff Abdullah and Dr. Donna M. Beegle. There were 98 individuals registered for the event, 17 of which were IOI members. The event was funded by an IOI subvention.

Federal Ombudsman received highest ever number of complaints in 2020
The Federal Ombudsman Syed Tahir Shahbaz has said that his office received the highest ever number of complaints during 2020 as 133,521 complaints and disposed of 130,112 complaints. He said that this was the result of its robust awareness campaign launched in the entire country especially in the far flung areas of Pakistan.
